@_daddydisco I’m not looking for rocket scientists during a found footage movie I’m just along for the Ride.
@_daddydisco In the films I’ve made, many times we have had the cameras “mounted” to the character so their hands are free and they’re just trying to survive, without even thinking of the camera still being there. In others, it’s been, “if I die, at least we told this story to save others.”

@_daddydisco @BDisgusting I’ve only seen the the first two and never really felt the need to continue the series, but my two faves are Tuesday the 17th and Slumber Party Alien Abduction!

@_daddydisco I think it justifies it enough. It’s easy to see characters who ask “did you get that/are we still rolling” as callous assholes but the flip side is: in a stressful situation I wouldn’t blame someone’s brain for internally renaming “camera” as “light”/forgetting about filming
@_daddydisco Lots of subgenres rely on contrivance but found footage movies have to justify their contrivance over and over and over throughout the entire movie, which makes it very hard to pull off.
@_daddydisco I'd say it was weird that found footage ever became so popular but a combination of being VERY budget friendly, and going mainstream at the exact time smart phones became ubiquitous and affordable (normalizing the concept of always have a camera in your pocket), made it possible.
@_daddydisco I think it makes sense! If its their only light source and they’re preoccupied with trying to survive it makes sense to me that they wouldnt waste time turning the live recording off and would just keep it rolling.
@_daddydisco Justifying why the characters keep filming is one of the trickiest parts of any found footage horror movie. (That’s why REC 3: GENESIS is one of my faves.) At least improving visibility is a practical justification, even though they don’t really need to keep recording to do it.
@_daddydisco I think for the sake of a movie, absolutely. It’s no fun if everyone can’t suspend disbelief for the sake of the movie!
@_daddydisco I think because of what found footage is, it’s often more likely justified than tropey. But it can also depend on the scene.
@_daddydisco Depends. If it is the only source of light, yes, it would make sense. Also, I'm insane, but I would also want to make sure that my butt is covered. Proof is needed, I'm not being blamed for any of it. I have a record, right here on film.
@_daddydisco I think it is fine if they choose never to use night vision unless the light gets broken in chaos or something, and the character has to.
@_daddydisco I'm happy to suspend disbelief a fair bit if the filmmakers will meet me part way with a half decent reason
@_daddydisco It's a touch flimsy... but does give a decent reason for wielding the camera about, and the characters often have a desire to document stuff too. I've certainly seen a lot of FF scenes with far less justification!
