One more time with feeling: The fear is not AI is so good it can credibly replace human creators at the same level of quality—it's that it will be deemed good enough by bosses and clients, who will choose the cheaper, shoddier option. That's the process that's already begun here.
The Society of Authors collected survey data from 800 of its members and found that 26% of illustrators and 36% of translators had already lost work due to generative AI. This tracks completely with anecdotal data from my own reporting. Not good. www2.societyofauthors.org/2024/04/11/soa…

OpenAI engineer James Betker openly stating that AI models ARE their dataset. If this isn't copyright infringement, I don't know what is.
"These models are truly approximating their datasets to an incredible degree" I've defended gen AI, but this stunning observation from OpenAI engineer James Betker (@neonbjb) would seem to bode poorly for the idea the tech doesn't infringe copyright on its training data.
Why would OpenAI choose to license anything at all if they truly believe everything is fair game? It's because they know they're violating copyright law and striking deals is how they plan to skirt litigation. ft.com/content/333287…
