Longer video of collapse of main span of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore after a cargo ship apparently hit a support column. It appears there were multiple construction vehicles on the bridge at the time. (Video playing in 2x)
@YWNReporter Imagine all of the traffic if a few hours later
@YWNReporter @lookner Lost electricity’s you can see the lights blinking!
@YWNReporter Look at the last cars able to get across and not knowing that they would barely have saved their own lives looking in the rear view mirror and watching other cars fall into the water
@YWNReporter 0:33 to 0:49 sec in, the ship’s lights go out then come back on. Power loss?
Fortunately most of the traffic was clear of the bridge when it collapsed but the work crew had no chance to escape as there was likely no reason to assume the approaching ship was on a collision course. Based on the video I can see any good reason why the container ship was unable to steer itself under the center span of the bridge. Only thing that comes to mind is that the ship's captain/pilot realized that the ship was too tall to make it under the center span of the bridge due to a miscalculation of tide levels and decided to perform an emergency stop by turning towards the tower structure and out of the navigation channel with the hope of running aground to aid the deceleration of the massive vessel. Should have never happened and I'm looking forward to the official accident report.
@YWNReporter There was a power failure just before impact. Something failed on the ship.
@YWNReporter @DaleBow54243415 3 construction vehicles. Possibly 20 construction personnel
