Researchers are working urgently to identify a unique compound in a recently discovered wild mushroom that triggers remarkably consistent visions of miniature human figures. Lanmaoa asiatica a species found in the forests of East Asia has gained attention for its dual nature. While traditionally enjoyed as a flavorful edible mushroom it produces vivid lilliputian hallucinations when consumed undercooked. Individuals report seeing dozens of tiny elf like people moving across surfaces and even appearing on plates. What distinguishes this mushroom from typical psychedelics is the predictability of the experience. Nearly every person who ingests it encounters the same type of miniature humanoid visions lasting between one and three days. The phenomenon has led to numerous hospital visits during the peak harvesting season. Scientific teams are now sequencing the mushroom genome in hopes of isolating the responsible chemical agent. Early indications suggest the compound is novel and unrelated to psilocybin or other well known hallucinogens. Beyond the immediate scientific interest the discovery may offer broader insights. Probably the most noteworthy aspect of this new EU tax duty on small parcels is that there was zero official opposition to it from China, even though 91% of these parcels come from China (via Temu, Shein, AliExpress, etc.) Which may sound surprising because China isn't normally shy about pushing back against hostile moves by the EU. For instance, they're very vocal against the EU's upcoming "overcapacity instrument" (see x.com/RnaudBertrand/…) or the tariffs on Chinese EVs. Yet here you have a measure hitting part of a €350 billion export channel (euronews.com/my-europe/2026…) and you get nothing - not even a pro-forma MOFCOM statement. At least I couldn't find any. I suspect a big part of the reason why is simply fairness. Interestingly, China used to have its own de-minimis loophole and closed it 16 years ago with virtually the same arguments the EU is using today. Until 2010, parcels mailed into China were exempt from import tax if the duty owed was under 400-500 yuan, which in practice meant roughly ¥4,000-5,000 worth of goods (around $600-$700) per parcel could enter tax-free. The system was designed for overseas Chinese sending gifts to relatives but it was, as is the case in the EU, hijacked by e-commerce. Temu in reverse, essentially. So in September 2010, Chinese customs slashed the exemption by 90% overnight (chinanews.com.cn/cj/2010/08-09/…). Their official justification could be pasted into a European Commission press release today without changing a word: parcel-splitting to exploit the exemption, tax evasion, goods entering China without safety or quality checks, unfair competition with domestic sellers who pay full taxes. In short what the EU is doing today is essentially copying what China itself did 16 years ago, using the exact same justification. And then there is something else: China is increasingly turning against what it calls "involution" (内卷, nèijuǎn), this race to the bottom where firms compete themselves to death with endless price wars, razor-thin margins, suppliers squeezed dry, and everyone working harder for less. Fighting "involution" is a key aspect of China's latest 5-year plan: they want to move away from China being synonymous with Shein/Temu-like cheap junk sold at razor-thin margins towards higher-value production and companies that compete on technology and innovation. Which means that, somewhat ironically, what the EU is doing here is - in some form - acting as enforcers of China's five-year plan: sending the message to Chinese companies that the involution model is unsustainable and they better find another way to compete than rock-bottom prices - which is, almost word for word, what Beijing keeps telling them. On the other side of the coin, that's also why you see pushback by China against hostile moves against its EVs as, from its perspective, it's 1) very much NOT fair (China welcomed EU car companies into its market - VW was for instance China's top-selling brand for almost 3 decades) and 2) an attack on the kind of companies China wants to promote: those that compete on innovation and technological excellence, not on squeezing the last cent out of a t-shirt. Same story for China's vocal opposition to the EU's "overcapacity instrument" which is even more egregiously unfair as it would effectively outlaw competitiveness itself: the instrument as it's theorized makes the appeal of Chinese products itself the offense - if China exports a lot of something, it's proof it should be barred. In any case, taking a step back, it goes to show that - contrary to popular belief - China's approach isn't reflexive opposition to anything that might hurt Chinese companies, it's more nuanced than that. At the end of the day the pattern is closer to something like the golden rule: if you do to us what we would do or what you'd accept being done to you, it's fair. But if you change the rules of the game because we're winning, that's another matter entirely.
