Don't know where to start for #WITMonth? I might have a couple (ok, more than a couple) of recommendations for you... findingtimetowrite.wordpress.com/2023/08/02/wit…
his playing has become so transparent, so imbued with what he is interpreting, that one no longer sees the performer himself—he is simply a window opening upon a great work of art
One of the 20th century’s great poems, on which Donald Justice played an inspired variation.
One of the 20th century’s great poems, on which Donald Justice played an inspired variation. https://t.co/uAu5EQuky2
Fiction from Thailand. Venom by Saneh Sangsuk, translated by Mui Poopoksakul. A short novel about snakes! #thaifiction #fiction #novella #reading
'Metal' #Eton
Monique Ilboudo’s So Distant From My Life, translated by Yarri Kamara & published by @tiltedaxisbooks This story is about a young man who takes his opportunity to move to another country, a story of why that’s difficult. #novel #fiction #booktwt #BurkinaFaso
“My strange, distant feet walked. The child lay like a shadow in the cot as I opened the door.” Fiction by Olga Ravn. nyer.cm/avfqnJ4
A little break from translated fiction to read Lucy by The Sea by Elizabeth Strout (published by @VikingBooks). The 3rd pandemic novel I’ve read, more direct than the others, is taking me back to the bewildered disorientation of 2020.
This World Does Not Belong To Us by Natalia Garcia Freire, translated by Victor Meadowcroft and published in 2022 by @OneworldNews. Characterised by a looming dread, this is a well written horror focused on Lucas, who has returned home. #Ecuador #fiction #novel
Voices of the Lost by Lebanese author Hoda Bakarat, translated by Marilyn Booth. This edition was published by @OneworldNews in English in 2021. A quick read with displacement as a central theme. I enjoyed the narrative structure, particularly in the first part of the book.
The Blunder by Mutt-Lon, translated from French by Amy B Reid and published by Amazon Crossing in 2022. A short satire, set mainly in the 1920s, about colonialism, racial stereotyping and medicine. Unsettling and unfortunately familiar #Cameroon #fiction #novel #translation
The Pear Field by Nana Ekvtimishvili, translated by Elizabeth Heighway, published by @PeirenePress in 2020. Quite a violent novel about assault and neglect, centred around Lela, an orphan at a residential school. Grim with a great end. #BookTwitter #novel #fiction
I’ve been enjoying @realmagicbooks, a great addition to Wendover’s high street.
What book would you recommend for a discerning 11 year old who loves The Whitby Witches by Robin Jarvis and Tom’s Midnight Garden?
Today is the anniversary of the launch of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine—and the birthday of Weldon Kees, a poet keenly sensitive to the catastrophes of his era. The refugee in this poem is, by ironic etymology, “the home of man”; he’s based on Wolfgang Born, emigre artist.
A Mountain to the North, A Lake to the South, Paths to the West, A River to the East by László Krasznahorkai, translated from #hungarian by Ottile Mulzet. This edition was published by Tuskar Rock Press/ @ProfileBooks #hungarianfiction #novel #BookTwitter #translationthurs
Back on the blog after a long hiatus, with an excerpt from a 2012 North Korean novel depicting deadly bromance between Kim Il Sung and #CheGuevara! #NorthKorea #fiction #literature #Diplomacy dprklit.blogspot.com/2023/01/fate-1…
Seasons in Hippoland by Wanjiku Wa Ngugi, an author from Kenya. This book was written in English and published by @seagullbooks. I liked this book, with a focus on storytelling and it’s power, family, radicalism, action, justice. #fiction #booktwt #novels
An incomplete summary of 2022. Books from ~24 countries for #readingtheworld, some others by authors I enjoy, a few impulsive purchases, a few I should have read years ago and a few chosen by my book group. #reading2022 #goodbye2022 #fiction #novel #novella #shortstories

@lynn70walton I really don't think that it is an issue of trying, failing, trying again, asking and making sure. This is not what it was. It was an assumption that westernised names are easier to say and remember. This is a way of othering. If it helps, even my very white husband found this as…
Wonderful month of reading in July. Too many great books to list all my favorites, but Zazie was hilarious and I have no idea how Barbara Wright translated it. Lots of reading suggestions from Kundera. Also a couple from Gardam - the Defoe was expected, but Fanny Hill?
What do you do as a translator when you author ends up as a bad partner? Recent incidents, not necessarily having to do with me, keep bringing me back to this fraught question. As translators, we love our authors, but sometimes translators can find themselves in awful situations.
I’m having a big moment. Just seen the August Read With Jenna pick and wondering how on earth I have not read this book? How is it possible? It’s quite possibly the most me book ever from the sisters to the setting to the eccentric family…who has read it?
“Has the present gone for good, never to be seen again? And what’s left behind?” KAIROS, Jenny Erpenbeck, translated from the German by Michael Hofmann. One of the best things I’ve read this year. Intelligent, complex, raw. Eager to reread already.
Celebrating the start of #WITMonth with some of my favourite books since last August:
If anything, readers need MORE help choosing what poetry books to read than novels, because there’s practically zero marketing for poetry in many houses and very little guiding the reader on what and how to read. Lots of life-changing poetry books that never get discovered.
It’s not entirely their fault. Media outlets and critics don’t cover poetry enough and most bookstores have a rubbish poetry section. Non-Essential Work has been out for 4 months and has had two reviews. By this point my novel had about a dozen.
Vaguely job-hunting again (although I'll hang on till the bitter end in the hope of some redundancy payment) and I notice that the Natural History Museum is once again looking for a Learning Manager - must be the 5th time in 7 years. Bodes well for the role, doesn't it?
First morning in London. Went to a café where the vegan breakfast was recommended. Learned owners are Turkish, saw something called “kofta kebab” on the menu. No idea what it was, kebab is generally tasty, ordered that instead. Ended up eating a giant meatball platter. Tasty 💜
I hate to say it but this is the first electronic device I have used that genuinely combines digital convenience with the aesthetics and haptics of print fetishism. It feels very much like reading a big hardback.
@BrendanFKP Let's hear where you have in mind re actually dangerous cities?
'Metal' #Eton
The Prime Minister is showing his metal in his determination to stop illegal migration.
@bowlga No not a British thing. A proper grammar thing that few people actually use correctly. "If I were you..." is 100% correct. I cringe when I hear someone say, "If I was you."
@bowlga Unfortunately it is a British thing that most of us have a poor grasp on grammar.
@MarinaSofia8 This is really interesting, but I don't know what the problem is with splitting the bill? I would expect to do that with someone/anyone? Perhaps it's a cultural thing ...
Novels featuring tea-shops – a few of my favourites from the shelves jacquiwine.wordpress.com/2023/05/11/nov…
Maureen Freely on translating a sentence from COLD NIGHTS OF CHILDHOOD by Tezer Özlü: "I must navigate her stream-of-electroshock-consciousness. It carries with it the full force of all that came before. It runs its current through all that follows." transitbooks.org/postscript/on-…
