I’ll grant you that Small Change is probably the best of Tom Waits’ boho barfly albums. But Blue Valentine is the one I love most. It’s just such a perfect record. Once that needle drops, i could spin it all night. His version of Somewhere that opens the album is the moment Waits says, “Right, enough with the snippets of old standards. I’m going all in.” And he completely owns the song, making it sound as though it belonged to him all along. It’s packed with some of his greatest tearjerkers too. Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis, Kentucky Avenue, Blue Valentine, just devastating songs that, no matter how often you hear them, break your heart every time. And there’s a harder edge to many of the songs: the junkyard howler of the Island years barging his way into the bar, scuffling with Asylum Tom for the mic. He doesn’t quite win this battle, but by the time he’s kicked out the boozer, he’s announced himself, and it’s an only a matter of time before he’s running the show. There’s not one song on here I don’t love. It’s one of those albums that plays like a greatest hits collection. If someone wants to hear what made the early Waits so special, tell them to play this start to finish…and then play it again. Which is exactly what I do.

In late 2007, a young Lionel Messi walked into a dressing room at Camp Nou expecting another routine charity photoshoot. Instead, he found a small plastic bathtub, a rubber duck, and a five month old baby waiting for him. The photoshoot was part of a charity calendar organized by the newspaper Sport, the FC Barcelona Foundation and UNICEF. Families from the working class neighborhood of Rocafonda in Mataró entered a raffle for the chance to have their child photographed with a Barcelona player. One of the winning families was Mounir Nasraoui and Sheila Ebana. Their baby was named Lamine Yamal. Photographer Joan Monfort later remembered that Messi was only 20 years old and naturally shy. At first, he wasn't even sure how to hold the baby. With a little help from Lamine's mother, he gently bathed him while the cameras clicked. It was simply another charity event. Nobody thought much of it afterward. The photographs were published in the 2008 charity calendar and then quietly disappeared into the archives. Seventeen years later, during Euro 2024, Lamine's father shared one of those forgotten images on Instagram with the caption, "The beginning of two legends." The world was stunned. The shy young footballer holding that baby would become one of the greatest players the game has ever seen. The baby in the bathtub would grow up through La Masia, break records as Barcelona's youngest debutant, become Spain's youngest international, and help his country win Euro 2024 before turning 18.
