Some recommendations of the Windrush Lessons Learned Review picked up threads of broader migration and asylum policy which are symptoms of the same basic ills that created the Windrush Scandal. A fundamental contempt towards what people in precarious situations [/4]
say about their lives and circumstances - if you just deny their reality, they have to go away eventually, right? Archaic, not-fit-for-purpose systems, manned by far fewer staff than required. [/5]
Then there are the issues that were hinted at, but not named as explicitly or forcefully. Institutional racism - a complete lack of responsibility and ownership for the circumstances of Black people, particularly those whose cases do not generate sustained media attention. [/6]
A sub-primitive view of humanity and migration flows, leading to an internal culture that primes officials to view people who are forced to come to them for help as not deserving of the same humanity as those who have the luck - that’s all it is - to be born here. [/7]
In the end, the damage done was so severe that even though he ultimately accepted a settlement, Anthony was burnt by this country. He went back to Jamaica shortly after his dealings with the WCS came to an end, then moved there permanently a while after that. [/8]
We are heartbroken - he was our friend, and he campaigned and worked alongside all of us to try and help as many people as we could. Most groups like ours are run by victims who have been through the system themselves. [/9]
It is injustice heaped upon injustice. As I have argued here, I don't think it is a coincidence that so many members of the Windrush generation are dying unusually young, of sudden and previously unknown conditions. This is an area that needs urgent research. [/10]
As stated on the fundraiser, we will keep records of what donations are spent on. Any donations that exceed the purposes of the fundraiser will be given to @WindrushJC, which supports the legions of victims still stuck in this unconscionable farce. [/11]
Anthony would've wanted us to end on this note: this will go on until we, the voters, force it to stop. Our govt and institutions are out of control. Public accountability is dead. As long as we let it go on, there will be others like Anthony. [/12] gofundme.com/f/bm3vvs-antho…
Get angry. Stay angry. Nothing changes otherwise. -Ramya Jaidev, co-founder, Windrush Lives, on behalf of the group [/13]
@WindrushLives Despicable. They ruined lives, just for the sake of it. There was nothing gained from it for anybody at all. Just so they could be nasty to a bunch of people they conisdered less desirable than other. Really it was a fascist move. I certainly feel less safe in this country since.
