The point is to show how far apart something from the middle of the broader population is to those on the edges, thus showing the breadth of the whole.

That's why Republic period remains align much more closely with modern Italy.

@tom456035 @the_transit_guy Also the densest cities in the US also happen to be among the oldest, so infrastructure costs are higher than they otherwise would be. Most American suburbs were build after WW2, so their infrastructure largely isn't as deteriorated yet.

@otterbo54348271 Not to mention it's a big contributing factor to cheap design/materials. With market rate housing, there is economic incentive for good design because it increases property value, but that incentive doesn't exist when units are income-restricted.
