Imagine being able to make stone translucent. Giovanni Strazza possessed that extraordinarily rare skill. His bust of the Virgin Mary, executed in flawless Carrara marble, is one of the most impressive feats by any sculptor. Strazza's "wet drapery" technique continued the legacy of previous Italian sculptors like Giuseppe Sanmartino, who produced mind-bending veils from marble a century earlier — the famous "Veiled Christ" is a canonical example. The tradition also dates back to much earlier sculptors known for carving intricate folds, in particular Renaissance artists like Michelangelo and ancient masters from Greece's Hellenistic period. But in the mid-19th century, Strazza took the technique to its extreme. The subtle layered effect he achieved allows the viewer to easily discern Mary's facial features from the delicate veil, and at the same time creates the illusion of total weightlessness. How he created something so soft and fluid from solid stone, using only basic hand tools, is a mystery.

Imagine the skill it took to make marble look wet. In The Nymph (1858), Italian sculptor Giovanni Lombardi carved solid stone to resemble water rippling around her bare feet. Completed in 1858 for a private palazzo in Brescia, La Ninfa showcases the astonishing skill of Italian sculptor Giovanni Battista Lombardi, a master of 19th-century realism who pushed marble to its limits. At a time when sculptors competed to make stone resemble fabric, flesh, and flowing water, Lombardi created a figure so lifelike it seems to react to the cold stream beneath her feet. Though influenced by Neoclassicism, Lombardi favored sensual realism over idealized gods, focusing instead on subtle human details like shifting weight and toes pressing into a streambed. The sculpture required extreme undercutting and polishing, where a single mistake could ruin weeks of work. Commissioned for an elite patron, it also reflected a broader fascination with artistic mastery. Lombardi was part of a small group of Italian sculptors sometimes called “the illusionists,” artists who challenged marble’s hardness by making it appear soft, fluid, and alive.

An 83-year-old retired art teacher is filling sketchbooks at an Indiana lodge, and the reason his hand moves this fast is a career spent drawing the one room in America where cameras are still banned. His name is Steve. He taught art in Terre Haute his whole life and for years he worked as a courtroom sketch artist. That job exists because of one rule. In 1944, Rule 53 banned photography in federal courtrooms, and it still holds today, including the Supreme Court. When a federal trial reaches the news as a drawing, that drawing is the only image the public will ever get. One pass. No photo to work from later. So the skill a courtroom artist builds is unforgiving. You get a single look at a live scene that will not hold still. You catch the geometry of the room, the posture, the thing on a face a lens would flatten, and you finish before the moment is gone. Hours of a moving room compressed into one frame. That eye does not retire. It is the same eye now landing on a creek, a tent, a campsite, laundry strung between two trees. Every page drawn from life, in one pass, the way he was trained. His wife died a few months ago. So he drives to a lodge in Spring Mill and draws. Drawing from life is the one task that will not let your mind wander off. The line goes where your eye actually points or it goes wrong. You cannot render a tree while you are somewhere else. For a man carrying that much, the most useful thing he ever learned might be the discipline that holds him exactly where he's sitting.
