I’ve seen this play out with the offending party the wife and in other situations the husband. The best course of action the offender can take is honest and forthright communication devoid of pride. The trust that was destroyed will never return and can only be substituted by understanding born of earned forgiveness. Earned being the key word as it is carefully built of communicating complete understanding of irreparable harm, consistently displaying genuine regret, and most importantly expressing genuine selfless compassion no matter what the personal cost. The accounting is so simple even pseudo intellectuals should be easily able to follow it: -Tolls are collected which represent “gross revenue”. -Operating expenses are deducted from “gross revenue” leaving “net revenue”. -Per the 15 year agreement “Net revenue” is split 50/50 with the US. -Only then is Debt service(principal and interest amortized over 50 years) deducted from Canada’s remaining 50% of “net revenue”. -After the deduction of debt service from Canada’s 50% of “net revenue” anything remaining is “net profit” which as you claim is likely to be minimal. Terminology matters. Net revenue is after operating expenses are deducted. Net profit is after debt service is deducted from net revenue. The 50/50 split is of net revenue NOT net profit.
