Police in Shiga Prefecture arrested a woman in her 70s on charges of shoplifting a 300 yen (USD $1.94) pack of inari sushi. They held her for a full THREE days before admitting she actually *hadn't* stolen anything and that her story that a friend had given it to her was true.
@UnseenJapanSite I’m guessing she gets to just live with that trauma for the rest of her days instead of there being any compensation from the police?
74 yr old woman FALSELY arrested for theft and RELEASED 3 days later... "The police examined the store’s security camera footage in detail and saw the man and the woman together. Police finally found the man on Tuesday, and he told them that he had given the woman the sushi. The store’s sales records also showed that the sushi had been purchased. Police said it took three days to release the woman because “It took time to confirm her statement.” They expressed their apologies." ⬇️⬇️⬇️ japannews.yomiuri.co.jp/society/genera… folks, welcome to the NEW Japon! @UnseenJapanSite Congratulations Shiga police, you fought an elder criminal so well. She might have been lonely. It wouldn't be the first time.
@UnseenJapanSite This is the saddest story I’ve read in a while. What have we become???
@UnseenJapanSite Good thing she didn’t try that with any Pokémon cards
@UnseenJapanSite Glad they didn’t keep her for the full 23 days allowed to intimidate a confession like the police in Japan often do
@UnseenJapanSite Insane, they really take petty crimes too seriously and just black bag people for who knows how long.
@UnseenJapanSite I know elderly theft is increasing, but that's excessive even if she was guilty😕
