The MFDP was unable to achieve its goal in 1964, but an integrated delegation from Mississippi was seated in the 1968 convention. Here is activist Fannie Lou Hamer speaking at the 1964 Convention.
During the 1964 Convention, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party sought to prevent the national party from seating delegates of the segregated state party and to replace them with their own integrated party delegates.
This summer will mark the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Democratic Party Convention, which was a pivotal moment in the history of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi.
We are pleased to announce the 42nd Annual Gulf South History & Humanities Conference, sponsored by the Gulf South Historical Association. The meeting will take place October 10-12 in Pensacola, Florida at the Holiday Inn Express Pensacola Downtown. We hope to see you there!
On April 23, Douglas Bristol, Jr., Ph.D. will present the lecture "War as Labor: Mechanization, Mobilization, and New Roles for Black GIs in World War II"
Join us tomorrow at 6 p.m. for 2023-24 Baird Fellow Paige Mason's talk "We Won't Give up on this Unitil We Get It" in LAB 108!
From designing rockets at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama to building them at the Michoud Plant in New Orleans and testing the engines at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, the region has been at the forefront of American space exploration.
The Gulf South has played a pivotal role in the history of the American space program. The Kennedy and Johnson Space Centers in Florida and Texas are widely known but other less famous facilities in Gulf South states play equally important roles.
How people move from place to place affects how and where we live in fundamental ways. Over the last two hundred years these changes have reshaped the region creating the Gulf South we know today.
The coming of the railroad diverted economic activity away from the waterways and towards the constellation of towns that sprung up around the tracks. This process repeated with the construction of interstate highways.
Changes in transportation technology have had a major impact on the history of the Gulf South. The invention of steamboats made navigation up the Mississippi River commercially viable, turning New Orleans into an important center of commerce.
However, the Black Sox's main opponents were other Black, semi-professional clubs in the Gulf South region. The Black Sox were a significant part of the history of Palmers Crossing and Hattiesburg. The Black Sox are still active and are currently owned by Trey Aby.
The Hattiesburg Black Sox began playing in 1941 in Palmers Crossing as a semi-professional team. In the 1950s and early 1960s, Negro League teams such as the Birmingham Black Barons and the New Orleans Black Pelicans played the Black Sox.
USM PhD candidate Sean O'Farrell is researching the history of Black baseball in the Gulf South as part of his dissertation. His research illustrates the cultural and economic strength of the Black community in Hattiesburg and their importance throughout the region.
The Mississippi Historical Society welcomes new president Rebecca Tuuri of @HistoryatUSM and vice president Roscoe Barnes III of @visitnatchez!
Here are additional photos from our event featuring Dr. Anthony Harris as he discussed Herbert Randall's photographs of the Civil Rights movement in Hattiesburg.
Last week, Dr. Anthony Harris - a Hattiesburg native - visited USM to talk about the Civil Rights movement in Hattiesburg. Here are some pictures from the event.
Join us Tomorrow at 6PM in the Gonzales Auditorium to see Dr. Anthony Harris discuss the Civil Rights Movement in Hattiesburg.
Last Week was the 60th anniversary of Hattiesburg Freedom Day! On January 22, 1964, over 100 Civil Rights activists protested around Forrest County Courthouse. Despite the efforts of local officials, 36 African Americans applied for voter registration a milestone for Hattiesburg.
As a public historian, he has worked in curatorial, research, and public programming capacities at Mount Vernon and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.
He studies the intersections of the histories of Native America, museums, and historical memory. John is the recent author of "The Amazing Iroquois" and the Invention of the Empire State (Oxford University Press, 2023).
Join us in welcoming Dr. John Winters as a member of the faculty of the Center for the Study of the Gulf South! Dr. Winters is an Assistant Professor of History and the director of the Public History Certificate program at USM.
