White-breasted nuthatches can be spotted year round across much of the country. They prefer areas with large trees and can be seen visiting feeders for sunflowers, suet and peanuts.
Many people think of robins as a sign of spring, but did you know they can be found year round across most of the country? In the winter, they spend more time in the woods searching for berries.
When there aren’t enough pine cones in the north, evening grosbeaks will head south in search of food. In the winter they can be spotted in northern states and lower elevations of the west. Photo courtesy of Mick Thompson. flic.kr/p/2j5yASs
Have you spotted any eastern bluebirds lately? These bright birds can be found across much of the eastern U.S. and parts of Mexico and Central America year round. When insects aren’t available, these birds eat fruit from a variety of plants. Photo courtesy of Gordon Garcia.
Northern shrikes are medium-sized songbirds that hunt for insects, small mammals and even other birds. They’re known for impaling prey on thorns and barbed wire, sometimes saving a snack for later. Photo courtesy of Mick Thompson. flic.kr/p/VrbS9p
Ruffed grouse don’t migrate, but roam short distances to find food. They’re well prepared for harsh winters and will bury themselves in snow for warmth or use conifer branches for shelter. They even grow protrusions of cartilage from their toes to walk on snow better!
Happy Halloween! The Halloween pennant gets its name from its orange and black coloring. It can often be spotted perched on plants waving in the wind like a pennant.
We’re going to be joining forces with our national account to bring you even more of the great content you’ve come to expect. Make sure you're following @USFWS to stay up to date!
My, what big ears you have! Endangered Ozark big-eared bats have ears that measure about an inch long. When young bats are born, their ears cover their eyes for the first few days. Photo courtesy of Jena Donnel/ODWC.
Here’s a spooky species - the hellbender! While not actually scary, these gentle giant salamanders are thought to be named by those who feared their odd looks and size. They measure about 2 feet in length and have loose slimy skin. Learn more: fws.gov/midwest/news/H…
Northern long-eared bats have short, broad wings that allow them to quickly navigate around obstacles like trees, branches and leaves. This ability makes them well suited to capture moths, flies and more in dark forested areas. Photo courtesy of Al Hicks/NYDEC.
Indiana bats are known as social animals that don’t need much personal space. In fact, they’re known to cluster so tightly that 500 bats can fit within a square foot!
Halloween is just around the corner, making it the perfect time to learn about bats! Though often feared & loathed as sinister creatures, bats are vital to our environmental health & economy. Learn more about why bats are so essential & how you can help. ow.ly/1tuk50BR4Lq
Ozark big-eared bats are an endangered species found in limited areas of the Ozarks. They utilize limestone formations in areas with mature hardwood forests. Given their limited population size & range, habitat fragmentation & disruption during hibernation pose serious threats.
There are 47 different bat species in the United States, including this northern long-eared bat. Bats play an essential role in pest control, pollinating plants and dispersing seeds!
Northern hawk owls are impressive hunters. They’re able to detect prey up to half a mile away by sight. Even snow doesn’t slow them down, they can easily locate and capture voles under a foot of snow!
Have you spotted any dark-eyed juncos lately? These birds can be spotted across much of the U.S. in the winter. Juncos that spend summers in Canada migrate south with some traveling all the way to northern Mexico!
Despite their name, fishers rarely eat fish! These forest-dwelling omnivores primarily hunt among the leaf litter for small animals, fruit and mushrooms. flic.kr/p/LbFBzP
