Two tragedies for our department in one week. Dr. Robin Lester passed away suddenly this past week while travelling in Argentina. Now we learn that Mrs. Christie Lowe passed in a tragic auto accident while on vacation. Two irreplaceable losses.
Tragedy has stricken once again in the same week. We just learned of the unexpected, tragic, accidental passing of one of our indispensible administrative partners, Mrs. Christie Lowe, Program Manager for Civitan International Research Center at UAB. abc3340.com/news/local/man…

Not sure I should be the one to do this, but let's remember the life of Robin Lester, a gifted faculty, scientist, and educator at @UNeurobiology. He will be dearly missed at @uabmedicine. In the short time I knew him, I loved his photography and perspectives on life. RIP.

@hardawayja @UNeurobiology @uabmedicine Terrible news!!! Robin taught me to patch, was amazingly patient with all my noob stupidity, and generally a complete delight to be around. He had excellent taste in music, once took me to a Buddy Guy concert, played Tangerine Dream CDs. He will be missed.
No one's life can be encapsulated in a tweet. Robin meant a great deal to the neuroscience community and @UNeurobiology. He will be missed.

Robin Lester was a funny, forthright, independent thinking person who cared so much about all the right things: "truth," how we understand it, and getting those concepts to the next generation of scientists. May his memory be a blessing

New lab preprint with work from @SvitlanaBach is now out! Here we explored distinct functions of transcript variants that arise from the Bdnf gene, which codes for brain-derived neurotrophic factor. A short thread... biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Super proud of @dr_emjorgensen for taking the chance on my lab and getting this F32 proposal funded on the first pass! Also excited to explore this area - this is the lab's first project looking at potassium channels in the ventral striatum.
