Respectfully, while education and life expectancy have improved, the lived experience tells a different story. Housing is far less affordable than 20–30 years ago, young people can’t buy or rent independently. We have a housing crisis. Healthcare waiting lists are at record highs. Major projects like the Children’s Hospital are years late and billions over budget. Birth rates are down sharply because of housing and cost-of-living pressures. And childcare is practically impossible to access for parents with children. The GDP numbers don’t reflect the strain on ordinary families or the quality of public services. Many of our young people are emigrating, including our doctors and nurses. This is not a measure of success.
