I've been thinking about that "bottle funk" you get when you open a new bottle (particularly cask-strength) and what contributes to that initial sulphuric nose and taste until the whisky settles down. Here's an article on bottle shock, oxidation, and more: hcdi.gs/3L3f5hD
@MaltedBlog Yes, this is what I was thinking. "They" hook you with a better blend in tasting packs and bars [and airports], but then they offload worse batches to supermarkets where the lowly folks who drink it on ice wouldn't know the difference anyway...
For a while, I suspected that my Tesco-bought Johnnie Walker Black Label was sub-par. Today, I have confirmed that by comparing it against a 50ml of Black Label from a tasting pack. It's an entirely different whisky! I know about batch variations, but this is very different! Sad.
