.@MakeItKenya is part of the historic signing of the Simplified Border Trade Agreement between the Republic of Kenya and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, facilitated through Kenya’s Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry and Ethiopia’s Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration. The agreement was signed by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for @Trade_Kenya, Hon. @GovLeeKinyanjui, E.G.H, and his Ethiopian counterpart and host, H.E. Kassahun Gofe Baleni, PhD. The agreement aims to boost cross-border trade between the two countries and is anchored within the framework of the Special Status Agreement signed in November 2012, which entered into force in 2014. Implementation of the agreement is expected to significantly enhance Kenya’s exports to Ethiopia through the formalization of small-scale cross-border trade. Key benefits include simplified trade processes, including streamlined licensing regimes that will reduce turnaround time for small-scale traders at the border. The agreement also provides exemptions for eligible goods originating from either country, in line with the COMESA Rules of Origin, from the requirement for Certificates of Origin. Such goods include camels, sheep, goats, fish and fish products, as well as milk and milk products, among others. Eligible goods will be subject to the preferential treatment offered by the two countries under the COMESA framework. In addition, the agreement empowers cross-border traders, restores the dignity of small-scale traders by elevating them to the same standards as traders in Nairobi and Addis Ababa, and supports joint infrastructure development at the shared border, including the establishment of trade centres. Most importantly, the agreement establishes a Joint Border Trade Committee (JBTC) to collaboratively address emerging challenges and identify new opportunities for the mutual benefit of the citizens of both countries. The agreement further optimizes the exploitation of trade opportunities available under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) frameworks. Kenyan exporters, particularly those operating along the Kenya–Ethiopia border, are strongly encouraged to seize this opportunity to expand their export activities. #ExportAgendaKE

Blue Economy Forum to Unlock AfCFTA Opportunities in Kisumu County

The Kenya pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, was honoured to host a delegation from Kenya. The group was comprised of the Vice Chairperson of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon. Kitany Marianne, and Hon. Joyce Kamene, a member of the committee. They were accompanied by members of KEPROBA’s Board of Directors: Mr. Ambrose Ogango (Alternate to the Principal Secretary, State Department for National Treasury), Mr. Ezekiel Mosongo (Alternate to the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Trade), and Mr. Gerald Mwangi (Alternate to the Inspectorate of State Corporations). The delegation was received and given a tour of the pavilion, which showcased Kenya’s products, cultural initiatives, and investment-ready projects intended to promote the nation's exports and position the country as the preferred destination for investments and tourism. The delegation experienced firsthand the high demand for Kenya’s premium products such as tea, coffee, flowers, macadamia nuts, and textile & apparel. Significant feedback regarding the demand for Kenya’s coffee was noted during a serving session graced by Hon. Kitany Marianne, Hon. Joyce Kamene, and Mr. Ambrose Ogango. Visitors expressed interest in purchasing the sampled products and were directed to Japanese retail outlets that stock imported Kenyan goods. Since then, we've undergone 5 phases of growth: 1️⃣ Reviving parts of the 3Cs & 3Ts; 2️⃣ Expanding: more coffee, tea, tourism, etc. 3️⃣ Diversifying the economy with fruits, fish, dairy, beef, and more; 4️⃣ Adding value to raw materials like textiles and sugar; 5️⃣ Entering the knowledge economy with products like automobiles and vaccines But to achieve this, we needed peace, infrastructure, and a skilled, healthy population. We've invested in electricity, roads, schools, and health centers. As a result, our economy has grown from $4bn in 1986 to $55bn (forex) or $168.5bn (PPP) today. @daddyhope Back in 2013 when we worked on the Ankole value chain, learnt that even with low milk production, The cow has lot of cultural significant, it projects power. Farmers cross bread them to get more milk. The pure breads have more value for cultural significance.
