It finally happened! Today at 12:15 we finished Freedom Trek on the Colorado Trail! 485 miles (6 weeks) of wilderness freedom and extraordinary scenery, plus many opportunities to tell fellow hikers about the genocide.

The utter vastness of this amazing wilderness sometimes leaves me speechless.
Tomorrow is our very last day of hiking. We will post a final celebration photo when we get to the trailhead. I’m already missing the simplicity of the wilderness and of standing up for truth and justice through this trek. Of course we will continue to advocate in other ways!

She knew very little about the situation and listened patiently. It probably was a shock for her to meet 3 hikers in the middle of the wilderness advocating for a situation back in her country! A good encounter overall.
For the first time we met a Han Chinese hiker today. ( Unfortunately, outdoor sports tend to be less diverse ethnically.) At first I was nervous about what she might think of the Freedom Trek cause. But I went ahead and shared anyway.

We have only 4 more days until we reach the end of Freedom Trek on the Colorado Trail (485 miles). Both the hiking and the advocacy on behalf of our Uyghur friends have been an amazing adventure!
This morning, with our good friends Terry and Debbie, we spent an extended time targeting and lifting up the Uyghur crisis in this incredible place. They also helped to bring our last resupply. Special thanks!
Last night moonrise over Vestal Peak (about 13,800’).
2 days ago we had the rare privilege of watching 2 moose feed in a shallow mountain pool. Wilderness is a place of freedom, where both man and wild animals can respect one other and thrive.
We continue to spread the word about the absolute lack of freedom that our Uyghur friends are experiencing. We have had many excellent conversations.
Last night we watched a huge bull moose frolic in an alpine lake for about an hour. That was a picture of freedom that we will never forget.
The weather has been quite cold with rain often at night. But we are in the San Juan mountains which are super rugged and beautiful.
We have now completed about 394 out of a total of 485 miles. That means we have about 100 miles left, which we expect to complete in one week. We are close!
We are right now camped by a small alpine lake at 12,500' elevation after hiking 13.5 miles today. It has been pouring rain and hail for the past hour.
After a dry section, we were glad to see the river, slippery logs and all.
