This should make you angry. This is Bonnie Pierce, a 38-year-old mother of three from St. Paul, Minnesota. Her house caught fire. She and two of her children escaped, then realized her toddler was still inside. Bonnie went back in, found the child, but could not get out. She shielded the child with her body. She died from her burns. The child survived. A GoFundMe for her family raised about $42,000. By comparison, more than $1,000,000 was raised on GoFundMe for Lindsay Clancy, who was charged with killing her children. It is a sad reflection of the society we have become. RIP Bonnie.

WAIT, SO A HOSPITAL BILL CAN HAVE THREE DIFFERENT PRICES? My friend mom went to the ER last month with chest pain. Thankfully, it turned out to be nothing serious. The bill showed $10,200. Insurance “adjusted” it down to $3,400 the amount they said they negotiated with the hospital. She still owed $2,800 because she hadn’t reached her deductible. So the hospital’s price was $10,200. The insurance price was $3,400. Her price was $2,800. Three numbers for the exact same visit. And none of those numbers mattered to the woman sitting in the ER four hours earlier, just hoping she was okay. How are people supposed to budget for healthcare when you can’t even know the price until after you need it?
