As a proud, card-carrying member of the VFFC (Vic Fangio Fan Club), one thing I hope that changes is the way his defense is seen and spoken about as a Quarters-based system. It’s not. In my opinion, this Fire Zone coverage is the most important thing to understand about it because he uses it as scaffolding for all of his 3-deep match zones like Cover 9, which is the foundation. I’m proud of Cody for his hard work in the name of the VFFC and middle-closed zone match coverage enthusiasts worldwide.

Don’t get me wrong…Quarters is important. It’s just not as important as many perceive it to be. I’m guilty of pushing that from way back when I first started really studying him because I thought I understood it after a few months. Little did I know, I’d get to meet a lot of coaches and players who’ve worked in it that set me straight on how the system actually works. It allowed me to see that defense from a new perspective and I feel it was massive in helping me learn.
@TheHonestNFL I like this AND you can add Narduzzi’s 6 man pressures and make small adjustments by making two MCD/deep MOF play “eyes” sitting on each hash reading QB front shoulder. Cody always talks about low cost install and the fire zone of Fangio to Narduzzi “eyes” is very low cost.
@TheHonestNFL What is cover 9 and cover 8? All I’ve ever known is 0-7
@TheHonestNFL How do you think a guy like Dejean would fit in this system?
@TheHonestNFL This is a staple in my defensive playbook. Only difference where you talk about if two routes develop in your area. My rule is take the more vertical and innermost route. That’s two ways to beat this coverage. So we take away bigger play (vertical) and easier throw (innermost)
@TheHonestNFL I played for Fangio, it’s not a “Quarters based” system.
