@BakaKarasu To be clear on which is which: Book One is the first hour, the first day, the first week — who to call, what to sign, what not to sign, matched to your situation. Book Two is everything after: the estate, probate, insurance, benefits, the courts. Two books, two jobs.
Practical guide, start to finish. It’s a step-by-step manual: death certificates, the funeral home, banks, the estate, benefits, and the specific situations that make it harder. No sermon, no scripture, no assumptions about what you believe. The chapter on clergy is there because some families want a pastor and some don’t, it treats it as your call, not a given.
Pastors are in that first hour more than almost anyone. You don't need permission to help your people better — keep copies on your shelf now, so when a family in your church loses someone, you hand them a map instead of a brochure. And if it helps them, tell the next pastor.
Every family has one person who holds it together when someone dies. We all face it eventually — just in different ways. If that's you, keep this on the shelf before the call comes, so your people aren't lost. Written by a father who needed it.
Thank you. Pastors are in that first hour more than almost anyone. Knowing it helps both you and the people you stand with is the highest compliment this book could get. Helping people was who my son Noah was, and if this book is a reflection of anything, it’s him. I’m so grateful you took the time to tell us. 🙏🏼
When someone dies, the clock starts — and no one hands you a guide.
Book One: what to do, in order, in the first hours.
Book Two: the estate, the benefits, the courts, the long grief.
Written by a father who needed it.
@DKNExCDN There’s a simple solution for this one. Just call in a welfare check on an elderly man. Who’s likely to not be able to speak or come to the door!

@mybluedog57 Thank you, Susan. Noah’s the reason it exists. I hope it carries someone through a night they didn’t see coming. This is truly in Noah’s spirit, he was the one everyone could count on, the one who showed up for people. That’s exactly who he was, and this is him still doing it.
No one warns you about the part that comes after the funeral — the estate, the benefits, the courts, the long grief. Book Two is the guide for it. The First Hour: What Comes Next
@steveeunpu Means a lot coming from someone who’s built and published as many books as you have, Steve. Thank you. The title and cover took a while to get right, it had to land for someone opening it on the worst night of their life. Appreciate you seeing that.

I’m so sorry about your son. Getting that wrong on top of everything is its own cruelty when you’re barely standing.
I know this is a lot to deal with at the worst possible time — but it’s also the most important time to get it right, because that certificate is what everything else runs on. His name, birthday, and Social Security number are exactly what banks, insurers, and the courts use to confirm the record, so an error there can freeze everything until it’s fixed.
Fastest path: call the funeral home that filed it first, if it’s recent, they can usually submit the correction to your state’s vital records office for you. Bring proof of the correct info (his birth certificate for the birthday, your ID for your name). If they’re slow or won’t help, go straight to your state vital records office and ask for the “amendment” or “correction” form yourself. Get written confirmation it was filed, and keep a copy of everything.
You’re doing the right thing by not letting it slide. It’s usually a few weeks to fix, not months.
My sincere condolences. I know in the situation there’s no words anybody can say to make it better. That would be a lie to even try.
When someone dies, the clock starts — and no one hands you a guide. The First Hour: what no one tells you when someone dies. A practical, step-by-step guide for what to do. The Book Everyone Should Have Before They Need It.
Different kind of first hour — this one's for the family left behind. It's the step-by-step guide for what to actually do in the hours and days after someone dies: the paperwork, the legal steps, the calls no one prepares you for. I wrote it after my son was murdered and found nothing like it existed.
Yes — it's 270 pages, and that's deliberate. It's built to cover every kind of loss and every stage that follows: a natural death, a homicide, a suicide, a death with no will, the medical examiner, the first day, the first week, the first months. Whatever brought someone to it, their situation is in there.
But no one is meant to read all 270. Page xvii — "How to Use This Book" — says exactly that: find the part that fits your situation, read that, and leave the rest until you need it. On the worst night of your life you might read fifteen pages — the ones that apply to you. The other 250 are there for the person whose situation is different, and for you later, when a new question comes.
The length isn't homework. It's coverage. The book is thick so that no family opens it and finds their exact situation missing.
The First Hour: What Comes Next — Book Two is here.
The first hour is a hard all its own. This is for the hard that comes after — the estate, the insurance stalling, the court dates, the grief that outlasts everyone's patience.
Not worse. Just next.
