Somehow I manage to live a very happy gay life despite not having any woke progressive friends. Everyone I know is sick of Pride, yet they all treat me like I'm, well, normal. And, admittedly I am biased, but I know some of the best people in the world, so I'm very grateful. I do realize that a big part of the reason we got to a place where someone like me is accepted like I am is because of activists who came before me. I try to always give credit where credit is due and give thanks to the good things earned for me by others. But I also believe very strongly that the activists who won this life for me were the ones who pushed a message of inclusion and integration. "We're just like you," was successful because people saw that, in many cases, that was true. But anti-assimilationist queer activists have decided to go scorched earth by deeming everything "normative," as oppressive. If they admit how good things got, they wouldn't be able to play the victim anymore, and having a victim narrative confers a lot of power in society today. Ironically, there's a risk of them pushing the victim narrative so far and using it to push so many boundaries that it actually becomes reality again. Boy who cried wolf, anyone? Anyway, I'm glad to have grown up when I did and sad to see the movement take a nosedive. We actually have it really good, and the only people putting that in jeopardy are those who forgot the goal was to be treated like everyone else, not better than everyone else.
