Something is way off about this “late and over budget” story being reported. 🤔
Jason Schreier: “FWIW I think it's a little strange that "Arkane's Blade is late and over budget" is becoming a lingering news story when the total number of big video games that were *not* late and over budget could be counted on one hand.”
Selling off Arkane is a generational fumble Sad to see companies like Microsoft/Sony grossly mismanage so much raw talent Our heart and prayers goes out to all those affected by these layoffs Just remember that your worth as individuals is not defined by your job Stay strong!
XBOX is laying off 3,200 employees, 20% of its workforce. They are also spinning off or selling Arkane Lyon, Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Ninja Theory & Undead Labs.

Bethesda was hit with layoffs across multiple studios today: BGS, ZOS, Arkane, iD, and more But one of the things I keep noticing is many who were let go are veterans of these companies with years of experience. Some literally climbed the ranks internally for a decade and were let go These people were cornerstones for these games. I really think this is going to be felt for players and the community dynamic going forward
I’ll have more thoughts on the Xbox layoffs but for now my only concern is for the 3200 people and families that will be affected by these changes, hoping everyone lands on their feet quickly thankful these studios will continue awful news today
Bizarre for Microsoft to be like “we’re focusing on Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein” and then gut half the studio that created these IPs. And super sad on the eve of The Dark Ages expansion, a moment that should be exciting for the team.

Matt Booty still being employed at Xbox is such a slap in the face. The man has consistently failed upwards and seemingly will continue to do so as Xbox flounders and gasps for air.

The Bethesda that I fell in love with has become the ultimate corporate version of itself: ZERO room for interesting new ideas and IPs that, while not selling particularly well, won the hearts and minds of fans (Dishonored, Prey, The Evil Within, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Hi-Fi Rush, etc.) Nowadays? It’s ONLY the big hitters, and don’t be surprised if Bethesda is turned into an Activision-style sweatshop.

@TheArkaneSlayer The only studios that were explicitly stated to be retaining their IP were Compulsion and Double Fine and sadly, I can absolutely see Microsoft and Xbox keeping the rights to the Dishonored franchise and doing fuck all with it.
While I am very glad to see studios like Compulsion and Double Fine return to independence and retain their respective IPs, as well as Ninja Theory and Undead Labs being given funding under new management to complete Senua and State of Decay 3 - HOW is this the timeline where Arkane are the ONLY ONES facing uncertainty?!? It would appear that the immersive sim curse lives on stronger than ever in today’s games industry, because what the HELL man?!? On a brighter note, Asha did confirm that no announced games will be cancelled so it is looking incredibly likely that Blade will still release, but it will be underneath a different publishing label more than likely. My educated guess and best case scenario is that Arkane either go fully independent (albeit without the IP rights that made them a popular studio) or they are swooped up by an EU based publishing company. French labor laws are going to severely prohibit Xbox and Microsoft from just straight up shuttering the studio and cancelling Blade, which is good, because it shows that at least SOMEONE is fighting for my beloved Arkane Lyon. However, these ongoing negotiations with the French government’s Works Council could take several more months, so while I am once again elated to see the other studios survive, I am still perpetually on the edge of my seat waiting to see what will become of my favorite studio. 😭💔
@MrEvil37 The fact that Wolfenstein is mentioned explicitly tells me that Wolfenstein 3 is 100% on the way and they are really investing HARD into that series going forward, especially with the TV show announced. It’s a series that is so good, it deserves more recognition.
This is odd to me, because it seemed that the game was always going to launch in 2027 based off some information that I found. Arkane would never intentionally “run up” the budget for the game either. Blade is no doubt a very ambitious title, so the devs are simply needing more funding to put the proper amount of effort and quality into the game to make it live up to their standards as well as our expectations.
