60 years ago today, Radio Caroline, the UK's first all-day English-language pirate radio station, begins broadcasting, challenging the status quo of the British broadcasting monopoly and brought rock 'n' roll and pop music to the masses, shaping the British music scene forever.
@ThatEricAlper It's still going strong, I was listening to it earlier 👍
@ThatEricAlper For a couple of years, beginning as an 8-year old kid in England, I used to listen to that wonderful station on my first transistor radio. Then we emigrated to Canada. The signal just wasn’t quite strong enough to cross the pond so… 😉❤️🎶
@ThatEricAlper It drove my parents mad but Caroline was my favourite station - sometimes I'd have to go out into a field to get a better signal and now I know more, I feel guilty at going through so many batteries.
@ThatEricAlper I was fortunate to be an early teen and my God it was wonderful. Late at night in my room , no tv but it was like having friends over. The DJ’s cracking jokes between each record. It’s a privilege having been around and been part of such a glorious time.
@ThatEricAlper What is the movie about this? With Philip Seymour Hoffman? It was great .
@ThatEricAlper And it inspired a movie:
@ThatEricAlper A long time ago there were pirates Beaming in waves from the sea But now all the stations are silent 'Cos they haven't got a government license Capital Radio -The Clash 😀
@ThatEricAlper Can’t mention that without mentioning this: Thomas Dolby - Radio Silence youtu.be/Yj_yFpL6uoE?si… via @YouTube
