yo! quick update from me on the project I've honestly been too busy and burnt out with lockdown to push this to launch. I want this to be active when it launches and have a slate of releases, and I haven't built up everything yet. not retiring the idea! just need way more time.

As far as I can tell, the cost of doing tapes hasn't been hit too badly by Brexit, but if anyone knows good Irish or EU duplication and equipment spots, let me know. I'm getting some releases confirmed for the label. I've a few ideas that labels/artists are on board with.

quick update from my side as it's been about two weeks: I'm building out the backend of the web store right now. I'm aiming for an April launch. I've decided for now to lean away from the tape club idea, and do a sort of kickstarter/everpress model with digital fallback.

an interesting extension of building the site like this would be that we could offer a fall-back for under-funded projects. if a project doesn't go to print, you could opt to receive a partial refund and a bandcamp code so the artist doesn't go home completely empty-handed 🤔

one thing that I've been thinking of more and more as I build out the platform is offering an everpress-style system, where a release needs a minimum number of preorders to go to print. it'd allow for broader price ranges and types of release while still keeping things risk-free

when I've sold stuff on everpress etc, I've often only just made the print level and made pennies, because they were one-off sales to a non-established audience. I'll put together a survey and see how people feel about it. sign up to tinyletter.com/tapes to get email updates

but the one thing that I'm concerned about with that system is getting critical mass for releases. I gravitated towards a subscription model at first because I figured there's surely 100 people who'd happily take a risk on getting a new tape every month
