with disabilities screaming down the internet because a member of the public has tried to help or engage, but hasn’t got it right. Stop, just stop. You’re the problem guys, not the people who are trying to help and engage but are perhaps a little ‘clumsy’ with it! Rant over.

So because of my speech impairment I can struggle sometimes with voice level and projection. I got accused tonight by a family member for “trying to start an argument”. Hand on heart I wasn’t, it literally just came out too loud. Urgh #takingthedis
Ever feel completely manipulated by a PA? They’re claiming that we ‘agreed’ to go out for food tonight… obviously at my expense. We definitely didn’t, but I’ve ended up compromising… at my expense #takingthedis #PAsAreExhausting
@CarrieALightley And, rightly or wrongly, assume that as a specialist travel disability blogger, you can help. I totally understand that you’re not a travel agent, but not everyone will immediately understand this and will be looking to you for confidence more than anything 😊
@CarrieALightley Absolutely I agree that this would be going above & beyond, and a pressure on your time. But please be kind - I think so many disabled people are desperate to get away, but are afraid of all the barriers… always remember that in your role, they look to you for reassurance 😊
What do you even do when you’ve got a PA who is going ‘out out’ and giving no consideration to the fact that you’re more vulnerable? Technically they’re doing nothing wrong, but I feel uncomfortable & am being made out to be crazy when I try & then cancel them #takingthedis
@Danwhite1972 By the way, I think Carers Allowance is a shameful amount, don’t get me wrong and it definitely is nowhere near enough. But, you have to use sound facts and concrete wrong doings to make your argument credible 😉

Bit of a specific one this one but I always end up having to totally going along with my PA’s political views to her face, which are the opposite to my views. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t actively talk politics with anyone, but neither do I like someone else’s views rammed...
I think it’s so underestimated the effects on mental health a PA can have, both positive and negative effects. And knowing how to strike the balance between having a good relationship but not being taken for a ride either. Finding it utterly exhausting at the moment #takingthedis

The longer I’m on this planet, the more I realise that people are just out for themselves. Which is fine when you’re able bodied and can fend for yourself, if perhaps disheartening at its worst. But, when you’re disabled and you rely on others, it’s shit and exhausting.

Disabled people don’t ‘overcome their disability’. When disabled people succeed, what they overcome are societal barriers. Important to acknowledge and reframe in this way if we are to shift perceptions and raise awareness of what really disables people 🚫 🌎
