Yesterday Mark Carney was asked if he will ban the SKS after the Montreal shooting. Instead of answering the question, he talked about introducing new legislation that would move Canada toward a firearm “expert-led system” led by the RCMP. That means the largest police force in Canada could ban any gun they want with a stroke of a pen. No parliamentary debate. No vote. No due process for legal gun owners. What is the point of voting if the people we elect to represent us keep delegating responsibility to unelected bureaucrats? This is not democracy, this is tyranny…
Before the information on the firearm and it's source is identified, and before the victims are even buried, PolySeSouvient wastes no time seizing the opportunity this tragedy presents for their long-held and very public position on the SKS. Despite a manifesto of over 100 pages detailing the killer's anti police, anti woman, antisemitic, anti-establishment, pro-communism views, PolySeSouvient reduces the complexity of this bizarre tragedy to a simple make and model of rifle. By targeting the rifle itself, rather than the killer, PolySeSouvient insults the intelligence of every Canadian who knows any firearm could have been used to commit this tragedy. This opportunistic behavior is deceptive and unhelpful. Until we can have a mature conversation about what drives someone to this type of extremism, we will continue to have these unproductive debates, at the expense of the victims and their families. Our hearts are with the brave police officers, the innocent victim and their loved ones.
