Weekly deep-dives into database internals — storage, ACID, indexes, distributed systems. One production concept per issue + working code in the vault. For enginsystemdrd.com Bay AreaJoined February 2025
This explores transaction logs, change data capture (CDC), event sourcing, replication streams, and how modern systems turn database changes into real-time events.

Isolation levels visualised — from dirty reads to serialisable anomalies
Link:bytesbtrees.substack.com/publish/post/1…
Isolation bugs don’t corrupt data — they corrupt results.
READ COMMITTED can give you internally inconsistent snapshots; REPEATABLE READ fixes reads, SERIALIZABLE fixes logic.
Your rate limiter says everything is under control.
The traffic tells a different story.
This explores burst traffic, distributed rate limiting, token buckets, edge cases, and the scaling failures that slip past seemingly perfect protections.

The answer is always right when it says no.
The real danger is when it confidently says yes.
This explores false positives, false negatives, system validation, authorization checks, and the hidden failures that quietly undermine reliability and security.

The cache worked perfectly.
Then you added one more server.
Suddenly, everything broke.
This explores cache invalidation, distributed caching, consistency issues, cache stampedes, and the scaling problems that appear when systems grow.

Rule: idempotency keys must be client-generated, not server-generated.
If the server generates the key, a timed-out request
never gets a key back — so the client can't retry safely.
Client generates. Server stores. Always.
The Stripe payments design question doesn't fail engineers
who get the architecture wrong.
It fails engineers who don't know what happens
when a payment request times out and the client retries.
Durability — what fsync actually guarantees, and the three ways it can silently lie
Link:bytesbtrees.substack.com/publish/post/1…
fsync() doesn’t mean “on disk.” It means handed to the device. Between RAM, kernel cache, drive cache, RAID, and flash, data can vanish while every API says “success.”
Reads never block writes.
Sounds perfect—until the bill arrives.
This explores MVCC, snapshot isolation, database bloat, storage overhead, and the hidden trade-offs that make modern databases scale.

One database write.
Ten writes behind the scenes.
You never knew it happened.
This explores ORM pitfalls, N+1 queries, cascading operations, hidden database costs, and the performance issues that silently scale with your traffic.

Your Kafka consumer stopped processing.
Dashboards looked completely normal.
This explores consumer lag, silent failures, partition rebalancing, offset issues, and the observability gaps that hide real production outages.

Atomicity at the byte level — what "all or nothing" actually means in hardware
Link:bytesbtrees.substack.com/publish/post/1…
Hardware writes can tear. write() isn’t atomic. Disks don’t promise all-or-nothing.
Yet a committed transaction is perfectly atomic — always all, or none.
You ship the code.
But you don’t own what happens after deploy.
This explores production ownership, DevOps culture, observability, incident response, and why reliable systems need engineers who stay connected to runtime reality.
