7/18/69: Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts drives a car off a wooden bridge shortly after leaving a party on Chappaquidick Island on Cape Cod. Kennedy was able to escape the submerged car, but his passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, was not. #OTD #Chappaquidick

The senator did not report the accident for 10 hours. On July 25, he pleads guilty to leaving the scene of an accident. He received a two-month suspended sentence and had his license suspended for a year. The incident ended his presidential hopes. He died in 2009.
