For many years, I believed meditation was something I needed to master. I thought I had to stop my thoughts. Control my mind. Achieve some perfect state of peace. And every time my mind wandered, I felt as though I was failing. But over time, through years of sitting quietly in forests, monasteries, and lonely places during difficult periods of my life… I began to realise something profound… Meditation is not about controlling the mind. It is about understanding it. The mind produces thoughts just as the heart produces beats. Thoughts naturally come and go. Some peaceful. Some fearful. Some beautiful. Some deeply uncomfortable. The problem is not that we have thoughts. The suffering begins when we become lost inside them without realising it. Meditation gently teaches us to step back and observe. To notice thoughts passing through like clouds across the sky rather than treating every thought as absolute truth. And in those quiet moments of observation, something remarkable often happens naturally: The mind begins to settle on its own. Not because we forced it… But because we stopped fighting with it. I think many people avoid meditation because they believe they are “bad at it.” But if you notice your mind wandering during meditation, that does not mean you failed. In fact, the noticing is the meditation. Each moment of awareness is already a small awakening from unconscious thinking. You do not need candles, special clothing, or hours of silence to begin. Sometimes meditation is simply sitting quietly for a few minutes and allowing life to be exactly as it is. Listening to the rain. Feeling your breath. Watching the movement of trees in the wind. And perhaps discovering that beneath the noise of thought, there is already a deeper stillness quietly waiting for us. Kind and Warmest Regards Dhamma Tāpasā
