@SlaveAdverts250 Shocking when you see the absolute evil mundanity of this
@nytimes Never believe the lie that it's too hard to find your enslaved ancestors. There are records. They kept (omg) inventory of us. They insured us. They used us for collateral. They knew our physical traits. @SlaveAdverts250 posts news ads that describe us and whose property we were.

As Biden said, America needs to "do right" by its African-Americans. 👀 #UnfinishedBusiness #Atonement #Repentance #Remorse #Justice #AmericaOwesBlacks #Reparations
Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: "RUN away ... a mulatto servant man." (Virginia Gazette [Purdie & Dixon] 11/8/1770)
It's easy to forget that slavery existed in places like PA in the 1770s. I remember being shocked several years ago to discover I had a slave owning ancestor in MA.
Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: "TO BE SOLD, FOUR likely young NEGROES, who understand the Brickmaking Business.----They are sold for no Fault, but that I intend to decline the Business." (Penn. Gazette 11/8/1770)
Lill was a tall, thin, "yellowish or tawny black" 17-year-old girl who was born in Long Island. On October 27, 1770, she managed to escape from slave owner Jeremiah Mitchell of Flushing, Queens, who later offered 20 shillings for her capture & return. x.com/slaveadverts25…
Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: “Run away on Saturday morning October the 27th 1770, from the subscriber, living in New York a negro wench named LILL” (New York Gazette and Weekly Mercury 11/05/1770)
1/ @SlaveAdverts250 reminds us that on October 26, 1770, The New Hampshire Gazette published this advertisement promoting “An Elegiac Poem,” by Phillis Wheatley. x.com/slaveadverts25…
Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: “AN Elegiac Poem… By Phillis, a Servant Girl of 17…” That "Servant Girl" was PHILLIS WHEATLEY, the enslaved poet. (New-Hampshire Gazette 10/26/1770)
The history of #reparations is more than most people know. #FullReparations is about healing #5InjuryAreas Which is more than just cash to close the Racial Wealth gap. Remember #WeCantWait, #HR40, #1619Project, #SupportHR40 & #5FormsOfReparations, #reparationsNow are needed.
Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: “RUNAWAY… a NEGRO FELLOW, named JOSEPH WILLIAMS, a taylor by trade…” (South-Carolina Gazette 10/25/1770)
The History of #Reparations is greater than most people know. #SupportHR40 & help #NCOBRA push #HR40 through. Don't forget #Black, #NewAfrikan, #DAEUS, #AfricanDescent, #AfroDescendant, #PanAfricanist, #ReparationsNow, #PanAfrican, people that WE need each other.
Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: “TO BE SOLD… 7 Negro Men Slaves, Household Furniture, Beds, Looking Glasses…” (Oct 15 1770 - Boston Evening-Post)
@annamarieyl @SlaveAdverts250 History without contemporaneous sources always seemed to me like a cross between myth & fiction. I wish we had more History teachers like you!

Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: “Fifteen Healthy Negroes” This advert is trying to sell cattle and slaves. Not much is said about the trades of the slaves or the places they came from. (SC Gazette 10/4/1770)
"To be Sold, or be hired out by the Month, A Negro Woman about 20 Years of Age.” The progenitor of convict leasing
Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: "To be Sold, or be hired out by the Month, A Negro Woman about 20 Years of Age.” (Massachusetts Gazette and Boston Weekly News-Letter 9/27/1770)
This is like police saying the description was a black man in a brown shirt and has a full beard. Then using the black man part to terrorize every black person they come across (I am sure).
Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: "RAN away...a Negro Man named YORKE. Had on when he went away a brown Fustian Frock, cloth colored Waistcoat... His Wool extends far on his Face" (Boston Gazette 7/23/1770)
And this is why Reparations is debt that must be paid to the Descendants of American Slavery
Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: "WANTED a few NEGROES, men, women, boys and girls-- Those persons who have any for sale may apply to the printer of this paper" (New-York Gazette or Weekly Post-Boy 7/23/1770)
"To be Sold, for no Fault" Our Ancestors were bought & sold like cattle. They could be sold as punishment for an alledged infraction for which they were found to be at fault. Now imagine being sold & separated from family for having done nothing wrong except...living while Black.
Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: "To be Sold, for no Fault, A Likley Negro Wench, about 18 Years of age, can be well recommended. Enquire of the Printer" (New-York Journal 7/12/1770)
