anyway if you're still reading this and want to check him out further, everything can be read for free at orwell.ru, although i recommend using reader mode if you have it because the website is not exactly easy on the eyes.
and he literally fought the fascists in the Spanish Civil War. his tall ass took a bullet to the neck because he wouldn't take cover like his comrades told him to. plus Chomsky cites him as a major influence
it's really a shame that we allow the right to appropriate 1984/AF as anti-socialist propaganda because Orwell stated in "Why I Write" that: "Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written...against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism."
some people ask me what my favorite book is whenever they learn i'm an english/poli sci major and my answer is always that Orwell is my favorite author kind of basic but i'm never referring to Animal Farm or 1984 (although the latter is important)
careful readers can discern his self-awareness of the absurdity of his privilege. thinking here of the essays "Shooting an Elephant" or "A Hanging" among others. plus he was a socialist so that's cool.
of course he was a British man in the early 20th century and so his writing is marred by all the attendant casual patriarchal racism of his time and place. but that does little to detract from his greatness, because...
many don't know that, in addition to the two mentioned above, Orwell wrote six other novels, as well as dozens of articles, essays, reviews, and poems. "Coming Up For Air" was published before Animal Farm, right before WWII broke out in force and it's a brilliant period piece.
i forget who but some contemporary of his described Orwell's manner of writing so clear and unadorned that it almost seemed inhuman. just a great man of letters. he might be the only writer whose entire published body of work compelled me to read it, piece-by-piece.
he had a kind of double-threat genius clarity both in the way he perceived the world around him and his ability to communicate those perceptions in a writing style so direct and concise it hardly seems to be a style at all
