I remember studying psychology, sociology, and behavioural economics at university and learning about what is often described as the “scarcity mindset” and the phenomenon of “proximate competition”. People living under conditions of chronic economic insecurity and abject poverty tend to focus on immediate and visible competitors rather than distant and powerful centres of economic power. The foreign-owned spaza shop on the corner becomes a symbol of economic exclusion because it is tangible, visible, and accessible, whereas banks, mining conglomerates, retail giants, and financial institutions are abstract, complex, and seemingly untouchable. Sociologists have long observed that when people feel powerless to change their economic circumstances, frustration is often redirected towards those closest to them on the social and economic ladder rather than towards those at the top who exercise the greatest economic influence. That is why many engage those they perceive as powerful with caution and respect, while directing anger, hostility, and sometimes violence towards those who are no more powerful than themselves. It is psychologically easier to confront the vulnerable than to challenge entrenched centres of power. This creates a cycle in which communities fight over small pockets of relatively inconsequential wealth while leaving larger structures of capital accumulation untouched. The tragedy is that energy which could be channelled into education, organisation, entrepreneurship, skills development, or demands for structural economic reform is instead expended on battles over the lowest rungs of the economy. They fight over spaza shops, which are often little more than survival businesses, rather than focusing on the institutions and structures that have a far greater influence on wealth creation and economic opportunity. Their circumstances, shaped by decades and even centuries of structural economic inequality, remain largely unchanged. In this sense, persistent poverty is often sustained not merely by a lack of resources, but by a failure to recognise where economic power actually resides, how it is accumulated, and how it is reproduced across generations. This is also reflected in political leadership at the highest levels, in the battles they choose to prioritise and the issues they focus on when engaging the proletariat and the lumpen elements of society. They focus on T-shirts, they focus on chicken and chips, and they focus on trivial giveaways that do little to transform anyone’s life. A T-shirt is worn today and discarded a year later, only to be replaced with another one at the next election cycle, whether five years later or perhaps two and a half years later during local government elections. Meanwhile, the structural problems of education, industrialisation, job creation, healthcare, and economic empowerment remain unresolved. That, in many ways, is the tragedy of Africa.

The Native is yet to understand the psyche of an ANC leader, they see government as an employment agency not an instrument to change society hence they hire their friends, concubines and family members with tenders as a form of "dulas" where employees steal from employer

Throughout history hate groups have always mobilised on the economic anxiety of the population. Letting these groups drive the national discourse is lending legitimacy to their hateful cause. They are not ‘raising legitimate issues’, they are poising the well.

The amount of procedural abuse that the Autocratic Alliance dishes out in council is becoming a joke. The speaker of council, Deep South Karen of the year award winner 2021 - 2025, Felicity Purchase, learned authoritarianism from when she was a tea girl for the National Party. Now she is reviving those apartheid and authoritarian tendencies here and now. We should be running the City of Cape Town from the civic centre. Instead we are on teams where she ignores the chief whips. All to protect Godfrey Gwynn Hill Lewis. @Our_DA hates governance. Hates oversight. Hates the poor. Loves the national party and its grandees, like Felicity Purchase.

The mobilisation, based on its framing of problems, DOES invite violence & hate. There is no way it is not going to result into mass looting & bloodshed. We know what we are talking about. We have organised marches since we were teenagers. We have looong engaged in nation scale agitation against - corruption, fees, anti-black racism and white supremacy. We have done nationwide shutdowns, confronted the establishment right from its heart for economic freedom & international solidarity. We are not NEW to this! We know it! We can see Counter-Revolution from far! It will not end well! Above all: it will not have any social or economic benefit from it. Zero! Just a country in ruin! We keep telling you, stop it, but you think you are heroic. Your handlers seek the destabilisation and international isolation of South Africa. And you are handing it to them on a silver platter- it will not end well! There is a BETTER way to deal with your problems: this is not it. You left those who are the cause of your unemployment, poverty and corruption unchallenged. You will only succeed to ruin your country- that is all! Again: I impress on you- stop this movement, it only leads to self-mutilation, self-sabotage and self-ruin

Former Constitutional negotiator? Is it not telling that you had to twist yourselves to create a ridiculous title for Roelf Meyer, instead of calling him by the roles he actually held? The SABC is a public broadcaster, not an extension of the communications wing of DIRCO. It is therefore offensive that the SABC will form part of sanitising Roelf Meyer’s history due to his convenient turn at the end of Apartheid. Roelf Meyer served as a Member of Parliament for the National Party from 1979, at a time when apartheid was at its most brutal, characterised by bannings, detentions without trial, violent repression of dissent, and the systemic exclusion of Black South Africans from political and economic life. During Apartheid, Roelf Meyer was the Deputy Minister of Law and Order and later Minister of Defence. The Department of Law and Order was directly responsible for the police machinery that enforced apartheid laws, crushed political opposition, and maintained a regime built on fear and violence. As Minister of Defence, Roelf Meyer was part of the political leadership overseeing the South African Defence Force (SADF), which was deeply implicated in cross-border destabilisation campaigns, regional wars, and internal repression. His deployment as an Ambassador to a US-Regime that is fundamentally right-wing and racist is not strategic, it is a consolidation of fascism and cosying up to hatred. It was even more painful that he was awarded with this on the day we commemorated Chris Hani’s death. It was Hani who warned us that Roelf Meyer was at the centre of the strategies to kill black people, and that he did not believe his ilk had changed. The SABC can at the very least be responsible, so that our children know our history. Roelf Meyer was not a “constitutional negotiator”, he was at the centre of the pain of black people during Apartheid.

The fact that majority of South Africa’s top employers are retailers emphases our failure to industrialise. Focusing heavily on consumption rather than manufacturing is driving the economy toward stagnation.
