I strongly condemn the arson attack targeting the Temple Emanu-El synagogue in Westmount, and my thoughts are with the community affected by this hateful and unacceptable act. Antisemitism has no place in Montreal. We remain in close contact with the SPVM to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to protect places of worship and all communities across Montreal. No one should ever fear practicing their faith or attending a place of worship.

A pro-Palestine protest in Montreal is now drawing outrage after footage appeared to show an effigy of a visibly Jewish person wearing a kippah hanging from a rope. There is a massive difference between opposing Israel’s government and using imagery that appears to depict Jews being hanged. This is exactly why so many Jewish people feel like “anti-Zionism” is being used as a shield for things that would be instantly condemned if directed at anyone else.
Hatred and antisemitism have no place in Canada. The display of a Jewish person in effigy is vile, deeply disturbing, and a clear act of hate. This incident must be taken seriously and investigated by the appropriate authorities. To Jewish Canadians: you are not alone. We stand with you. We will always defend the safety, dignity, and belonging of every community in this country.
