Comments crisis team told Fern: "If you wanted to kill yourself you'd already be dead." "If you are phoning us then you aren't really suicidal as you are asking for help." "If you want to kill yourself that's your choice." "What do you expect us to do about it?" #JusticeForFern
@Shrink_at_Large I've heard of people being told this. It's awful.
@Shrink_at_Large "It's your responsibility to ask for help" "Why are you ringing us? What are we supposed to do?" "You need to tell us when you are suicidal" "Saying you are suicidal is manipulative! You are attention seeking!" Perfect way to create hopelessness and helplessness
@Shrink_at_Large Yeah that's the norm tbh. Few years back it was a lot more helpful. These days? Yeah, how your salary is justified is beyond me.
@Shrink_at_Large What an unbelievably cold attitude for a human being to have about suicide prevention. And it was their crisis center team. Blooody hell…. They’re basically telling her to go jump off a bridge with that tact.. By the way, I know. I’m a suicide loss and an attempt survivor.
@Shrink_at_Large "Where are you in your car? Oh sorry, you are out of area for our services. Please call back when you are in our service area."
@Shrink_at_Large After people have killed themselves: "Ask for help, help is out there, don't suffer in silence". When people ask for help before they kill themselves: "You're not really suicidal, or you wouldn't be asking for help".
@Shrink_at_Large Unfortunately heard all of these and more from ‘professionals’ although many years ago now. As a MH nurse I can’t imagine ever saying anything like that to someone. I will never forget those ‘professionals’ who unknowingly shaped the nurse I am now to be anything but like them.
@Shrink_at_Large Those 3 statements are what crisis and the duty worker told me a few months ago. Those exact words. I no longer engage with CMHT or crisis when needing help.
