On beauty - it’s really difficult to develop/create products (hair, makeup, skincare, body care)for “everyone”. Someone (demographic) will always be and/or feel excluded. I know I did &still do a lot of the time, hence my driving force into the beauty space from a very young age.
Inclusivity, while it means well, is a farce. Even for the mammoth companies, it’s hard for them to create that 1 brand that will cover “all”. You just can’t. So I think indie founders have an opportunity to create for & focus on a niche.
If that niche happens to expand organically, then great. But create the very best for your niche & let them be happy, knowing the product(s) you created for “them” WORKS.
I know it’s super sexy now for brands to present “diverse” marketing to pretend to include multiple demographics. And it’s buzzy & in many cases bringing in the $$$.
But unless one fears that their niche is not big or representative enough to be catered to alone, then this needs to be delved into on a deeper level. For me as a brand founder, my demographic & niche is who & what I know because I’m one of them.
But until then, I’m not going to lie & pretend that my shampoo or deep conditioner or skin serum for hyperpigmentation works for a certain hair or skin type when I know you have other options from other brands that may work much better 4 you. But for now, let’s just be going sha.
