The motives and ideology behind Mayor Mamdani’s refusal to attend the Israel Day Parade can certainly be debated. But the assumption that the mayor of New York is somehow obligated to attend a parade celebrating a foreign country is deeply problematic. This is not a Jewish day parade. It is explicitly a parade in support and celebration of the State of Israel. Public officials may choose to attend the parade for cultural or political reasons, and people are free to praise or criticize those choices. But treating attendance as a requirement is unacceptable.
