Retention isn’t just for subscription brands.
This jewelry brand started with poor deliverability.
After fixing the fundamentals and improving the retention system, returning customer rate went from 5.64% → 11.20%.
That’s almost a 100% increase in 30 days.
And no, this isn’t an MRR brand.
Even for one-time purchase brands, getting customers to come back matters.
100% agree. I’m sure a lot of brands have been fooled by this.
For subscription brands, we exclude active subscribers from standard campaigns unless we’re intentionally sending something specifically to them.
We have our customized metric “True Email Revenue” revenue from one-time purchases only, excluding recurring subscription charges.
Your Klaviyo revenue is probably inflated.
If your agency emails active subscribers, every recurring charge after an open gets credited to the campaign. They were getting charged anyway.
Sending to active subscribers also pushes your churn up.
Full-price subscribers seeing
“Pop-ups decrease your CVR.”
Only if your pop-up is badly structured.
A well-built pop-up can actually improve conversion while capturing more emails.
One of our brands in the last 30 days:
→ 29.11% submit rate
→ 1.1K+ emails captured
→ CVR +7%
So don’t blame the pop-up.
Blame the boring one.
Day 46 - Building a retention engine for a $1M+/mo brand
October starts.
Flows are performing decent so far, but our main focus this month is Q4 preparation.
The plan:
→ Improve deliverability by Oct 15
→ Make sure the account is ready before BFCM volume hits
→ Test different offers throughout October
→ Find the strongest offer and use it for BFCM + December
We don't want to enter November and start guessing what offer will work.
October is basically our testing month.
Fix deliverability first.
Test offers next.
Then scale what wins.
Let's see how it goes.
Day 47 next.
Day 44 & 45- Building a retention engine for a $1M+/mo brand
Missed yesterday’s update, so here’s the full September recap.
Email attributed $79,634.64 in revenue this month.
And we did that with:
→ No proper popup capturing a high volume of emails
→ No welcome flow live
→ Limited list growth compared to what the store traffic should allow
September was also the month we started pushing more campaign volume, because we were finally comfortable with the deliverability.
Flows are doing their job too.
The biggest winner:
Post-purchase generated almost $30k by itself.
And on top of that, the returning customer rate increased by 58% compared to the previous period.
That’s probably the biggest retention win of the month.
Abandoned checkout, cart, browse and the other flows are all contributing as well.
The main thing holding email % back right now is simple:
Not enough people are entering the email ecosystem.
The system is working.
Now we need more volume going into it.
Q4 starts now. Let's gooo guys !
Can't deny this.
In today's market, finding a "winning product" is not enough.
The real game is understanding the customer deeply:
Who are they?
1. What problem are they actually trying to solve?
2. What angle makes them care?
3. What offer makes the decision easier?
Brands need to spend more time on customer psychology, avatars, and testing different offers.
A simple 20% OFF doesn't hit the same anymore.
The brands that win are the ones that know how to position the same product better.
Stop chasing winning products.
Start building a winning offer.
The product is 20% of it. The angle, the bundle, the guarantee and the page are the other 80%.
That's why two stores sell the same item and only one survives.
100% agree that the commitment is a huge part of why quiz funnels work.
The only thing I’d be careful about is the number of questions.
A 6-question quiz can create deeper personalization, but it can also create more friction and hurt completion rates.
Sometimes a single question with 4–5 clear options is enough to understand the customer's intent.
Then you can segment based on their answer and send a more personalized welcome flow.
You still learn what problem they have, collect more emails, and personalize the experience without making the customer feel like they're filling out a survey.
The depth of data is valuable, but balancing personalization vs friction is the key.
Should you do a quiz funnel?
Quiz funnels work for one reason that has nothing to do with the quiz.
By the time someone answers 6 questions about their own situation, they've spent 5 minutes describing their problem to you.
The recommendation at the end lands differently than
For Q4, you just need to:
1. Make sure your deliverability is on place (80) in Klaviyo
2. Offers testing
3. Early Access for BFCM
4. Sale angle in November, Gifting Angle in December
5. Crush Q4
Q4 is coming, and if you run a clothing brand, I'd test this before BFCM.
Take your best-selling products.
Put them together.
Give the combination a reason to exist:
Fall outfit. Weekend look. Date night. Travel fit.
We tested this approach for a clothing brand.
$2.5K+ from one campaign.
$161.65 AOV.
You're not always looking for another product to sell.
Sometimes you're looking for a better way to package what already sells.
Day 43 - Building a retention engine for a $1M+/mo brand
Nothing crazy today.
Mostly just keeping the machine running:
→ Campaigns are going out
→ Small flow optimizations are happening
→ Waiting on client approval for the next few changes
→ October campaign calendar is fully planned
Meanwhile, email has now crossed $69k+ in attributed revenue this month.
Flows are still doing most of the heavy lifting, while campaigns continue adding consistent revenue on top.
At this point, a lot of the work is less about rebuilding everything...
and more about finding small improvements in a system that's already working.
Now we wait for the green light on the next phase.
Day 44 next.
