The Duke of Kent, 88, arrives at the Guards’ Chapel on his last day as Colonel of the Scots Guards after 50 years in the role. The King has asked the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, to become the next Colonel of the regiment.
The Scots Guards remember their fallen and say farewell to their outgoing Colonel, the Duke of Kent, who is handing over the role to the Duke of Edinburgh.
The Duke of Kent, who still has around 140 patronages and attended 75 official engagements last year, has no plans to retire but has been scaling back his duties. The Duke of Edinburgh’s appointment to such a prestigious role shows how central he now is to the monarchy.
The Duke of Kent leaves Wellington Barracks on his last day as Colonel of the Scots Guards, his route lined by soldiers and veterans as Pipe Major John Mitchell performs his own composition, The Colonel, and the regimental march, Highland Laddie, in tribute.
