In 1896, Switzerland started building a railway straight into the Alps. 16 years later, passengers could step off a train 3,454 meters above sea level. It’s still the highest railway station in Europe. The idea came to Swiss businessman Adolf Guyer-Zeller a few years earlier. In 1893, he was walking above Mürren with his daughter when he saw a train climbing toward Kleine Scheidegg. He looked toward the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and started wondering why the railway had to stop there. That night, he went back to his hotel and sketched out an idea. Build a railway higher into the mountains. Construction began in 1896. The first section climbed from Kleine Scheidegg toward the Eiger Glacier. From there, things got considerably harder. They started tunneling into the mountains. The finished Jungfrau Railway is a little over nine kilometers long. About 7.6 kilometers of it run through tunnels inside the Eiger and Mönch. Think about doing that more than a century ago. Much of the workforce was Italian. These men were drilling, blasting and hauling rock out of the Alps long before modern tunneling equipment made projects like this remotely routine. Guyer-Zeller never saw the railway finished. He died in 1899, only a few years after construction began. His original plan was even more ambitious. He wanted the railway to continue all the way toward the summit of the Jungfrau. It never made it that far. After his death and mounting financial pressures, the project was eventually scaled back. Jungfraujoch, the saddle between the Mönch and Jungfrau, became the final destination. The railway opened all the way to Jungfraujoch on August 1, 1912. You can still ride it today. Most people go to Switzerland for exactly what you’d expect: mountains, lakes, villages and train rides where you spend half the journey staring out the window. But the engineering is part of the reason I find the country so interesting. On the older route toward Jungfraujoch, you climb through Kleine Scheidegg before reaching Eigergletscher. Then the train disappears into the mountain. For much of the final climb, there isn’t some perfect Swiss panorama outside your window. There’s rock. You’re traveling through the Eiger. Eventually you arrive at Jungfraujoch and step into the high Alps with the Aletsch Glacier stretching away below you. It’s the largest glacier in the Alps. I wouldn’t rush this part of Switzerland. Stay in the Bernese Oberland for a few days. Mürren would be high on my list. So would Wengen. Walk around Lauterbrunnen. Spend some time looking up at the mountains from the valley. Take the older route through Kleine Scheidegg if you have the time. Then ride up to Jungfraujoch. The trip hits a little differently when you know what went into building it. Someone was walking above Mürren in 1893, looked across at these mountains and thought a railway should go farther up. Then people actually built it. More than 130 years later, you can stand in roughly the same landscape, board a train and ride through the mountains he was looking at. That's my favorite part of the story.
