So, I am doing a film analysis of Mat Kilau for my class on 'Fascism, Authoritarianism and Populism'. I watched it a couple days ago, for my research, and wow I feel justified in not watching it before. Truly a dangerous piece of media - its not subtle at all
Objectively, it had very lazy writing. It did a lot of 'telling, not showing', which also makes my analysis easier, I suppose. Because the writers/actors articulate their rhetoric, ALL THE TIME. I don't even have to guess/intepret lol

@Roshinee_M You're right in terms of the single dimension characters, and as a history buff it's hard to be factual versus appealing to the market it sells to. Would be better done like a dramatized documentary ala Netflix like Alexander, Moses, and other historical figures.
@Roshinee_M Never did got down to watch it.....not a lost I suppose
@Roshinee_M Most Malay movies are rubbish. There. I said it
@Roshinee_M Ah, historical Malay feudalism to current authoritarianism using questionable dialogues. Unlike the real lad I am not kebal towards cringe.
@Roshinee_M The representation of certain kinds of ethnics in that movie quite disturbing. Especially when the assassins that work for the British are from Borneo.
