OTD 1995 the @Yankees sign @DocGooden16 to a multi-year contract. Doc was about to sign with the @Marlins until, after a one-on-one meeting, George Steinbrenner offers him a deal. Gooden, having served a drug-related suspension, has not pitched in over a year.

OTD 1996 the @Yankees defeat the @Orioles 6-4, winning their first pennant since 1981. Manager Joe Torre, who has played or managed a major league record 4,280 games without reaching the World Series, finally gets there. @bw51official wins Series MVP. youtube.com/watch?v=RjCcYE…

OTD 1991 the @Mets announce Jeff Torborg as their new manager, after Torborg and @whitesox management have a falling out. “I don’t know much about him but if he’s someone who comes in and puts his foot down, that’s what we need,” says @DocGooden16 of his new manager.

OTD 1996 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier deflects a @derekjeter fly ball from the playing field into the right field stands during Game 1 of the ALCS. Right field umpire Richie Garcia immediately rules the play a home run, tying the game. NY wins in the 11th. youtube.com/watch?v=YVNlvn…

OTD 1995 in his final game as a player, Don Mattingly hits a go-ahead 2-run double in the 6th inning of ALDS Game 5. The Yankees lose the game and series in the 11th and Mattingly tells teammates on the flight home that this was his last game. youtube.com/watch?v=P_0gtx…

OTD 1991 the @Yankees fire manager Stump Merrill. He ends his MLB managerial career at 120-155 but eventually returns to manage the team's Triple A club. Along with Merrill, 5 of the team’s 6 coaches are also let go, including 3rd base coach Buck Showalter.

OTD 1991 in the last game of the year @dcone36 strikes out 19 @Phillies, tying the NL single game record. He ends up with 241 strikeouts for the year, tied with Roger Clemens for the most in baseball. The @Mets finish the year 77-84, 5th in the NL East. youtube.com/watch?v=vfWHmC…

OTD 1992 Willie Randolph plays the last game of his career in the Mets' season closer. In the 9th, Randolph walks and gets a warm ovation when he's replaced with a pinch runner. Randolph ends his career with 2,210 hits, 271 stolen bases and 6 All-Star Game appearances.

OTD 1995 the @Yankees begin Game 2 of the ALDS against Seattle. The game goes 15 innings, stretches into the next day and ends when @therealjleyritz hits a 2-run home run in the 15th. It's one of the greatest games ever played. NY takes a 2-0 series lead. youtube.com/watch?v=7fXiBs…

OTD 1993 the @Mets end the season (59-103) with their 6th straight win, the only time all year they've won more than 3 games in a row. Chico Walker, already told by the club he'll be released after the game, homers in his last at-bat, which turns out to be the last of his career.

OTD 1990 in the @Yankees last game of the year, Cecil Fielder becomes the first player in 13 years to hit 50 home runs in a season. He adds another later in the game and ends the year with 51. The Yankees, 67-95, finish last for the first time since 1966. youtube.com/watch?v=vfQT91…

OTD 1995 the Mets end the year with their 6th straight win, an 11-inning walk off effort. After the game players and coaches stand outside the dugout and toss their caps into the crowd. A season recap on the scoreboard ends with an ad for Opening Day in 1996. The crowd goes nuts.

OTD 1990 John Franco, leading the NL saves, blows a 9th inning lead against Chicago and, with the Mets having just been eliminated from playoff contention minutes earlier, is booed off the mound when Bud Harrelson removes him mid-inning. Franco believes Harrelson embarrassed him.

OTD 1995 Pat Kelly hits the @Yankees biggest regular season home run in 17 years when his 1 out, 2-run 9th inning shot gives the Yankees a 4-3 lead and eventual win in Toronto. The win maintains NY's wild card lead and puts their playoff magic number at 2. youtube.com/watch?v=kmewBv…
