STARMAN, my serendipitous image of a celestial once-in-a-lifetime photobomb is my only 1/1 available on the secondary market at 30.9 ETH 🚀🧑🏽🚀🚗 #2 in the LuxNoctis series on @SuperRare 🧵👇
I've always strived to create photos that have never been made before, images that speak more to vast geologic timescales than documenting decisive moments, but this photo does both, something I never thought was possible. superrare.com/0x8a1f7cc4e1c7…
Feb 6, 2018 I was photographing a distinctive rock formation at the top of a tall mesa in a remote area of Arizona, using my drone to create the perfect lighting. Just me and a load of kit, alone for days with no one but distant coyotes for company.
While I was photographing, I noticed in the sky to my right a very bright and very fast moving point of light. Too fast and constant be a plane, too bright to be a satellite. WW3?? Out of curiosity, I kept pressing my shutter.
It got brighter and brighter, moving in an arc across the sky above the peak, until it bloomed into a brilliant white aurora, slowly and silently expanding before eventually dissipating back into darkness. By this time, it had dawned on me what I was witnessing.
At this point I was literally shaking, unable to contain my exhilaration at what I had just seen, all alone at the top of a big rock in the wilderness. It was slowly sinking in what I had inadvertently captured. Something important in human history?
It was the SpaceX Falcon Heavy on the 2nd stage burn of its maiden voyage to Mars with a guy named STARMAN in its nose cone, as confirmed by my rocket friends @thejackbeyer & @Hillarycoe, doing a stunning, majestic photobomb 🤯
@Reuben_Wu @Hillarycoe Still one of my favorite shots of yours, and of course there are a shitload of contenders bc you’re you. 🔥
