On the heels of Hobbs' veto of the Starter Homes Act, @POTUS released policy solutions to increase the supply of affordable housing. It makes the case for why the heart of the Starter Homes Act and other zoning reforms are necessary. Let's dig in. 🧵 whitehouse.gov/wp-content/upl…
The problem: Housing prices continue to outpace wage growth. At the same time, US housing production is not keeping up with population growth and the report specifically points out how smaller starter homes are no longer as readily available.
With less supply comes higher prices. One of the key contributing factors? Land-use regulations that limit density, impose minimum lot sizes, and require unreasonable parking spaces. These policies create "artificial barriers that hinder growth and drive up the cost of housing."
