Why so much research into addiction is plain wrong. 🧵 Addiction is not simply a compulsion or a moral failing. It is a maligned form of attachment. When early caregivers are absent, frightening, or unpredictable, the child turns to internal strategies.

Oftentimes, patients do not come to therapy to change. Not really. They say and think they want to change. It soon becomes evident they want to continue being exactly the person they have been, and living life in the same self-defeating ways—but feel better doing it. Real psychotherapy begins with helping the person to understand not only intellectually, but to truly take to heart, that what they want is impossible. In other words, the real work of therapy may begin with crushing disappointment, as the patient struggles to reconcile with the painful truth: neither the therapist nor anyone else has the power to give them what they want. To feel different, they must become different. And there is no bypass around that psychological work. Paradoxically, it is this terrible disappointment that opens the door to realistic hope. Sadly, for every therapist who understands this and is prepared to join the patient in doing the difficult work, there are many more “therapists” happy to bolster the patient's illusion that they can can feel different without becoming different, and therapy can work by magic. Choose wisely.

Suicidal people deserve a space to talk about their suicidal feelings without risking hospitalization/institutionalization or being accused of being manipulative or attention seeking

@romyromy21_ THIS THIS THIS!!! It's actually so frustrating as the categorisation of us as manipulative just reinforces our emotional dysregulation and attachment issues - it's a trauma disorder for a REASON :,)

May is BPD Awareness Month. Borderline Personality Disorder is one of the most misunderstood and stigmatized mental illnesses (even by professionals). It's also been badly misrepresented in medias for years, which exponentially aggravated the stigma around it.

Mindfulness. One thing I rejected before DBT was mindfulness. But, I eventually realised it was a tool to see the calm in the world, not just humming and pretending to be a leaf (always hated that!). Calmness exists, you just have to know where to look. #mindfulness #quote #calm
