Heard the news that Alex Cimo, a fellow card game YouTuber, has passed away. I did not know him. I can offer some math for those who did. People collectively spent about 4,232 years watching his videos. So 32 years is all he got, but he gave the world an extra 4,200 years of laughs, knowledge, and peace, one view at a time. That's one hell of a life.

Steam just made a change that's really gonna hurt future indie games. The Popular Upcoming page used to list games chronologically by release time. As long as you had enough wishlists to make the cut (~6k to 7k), you'd get some time at the top of the list for people to discover your game. Now it's listed algorithmically, with far more large games from major companies and publishers on the list, even those releasing two weeks away. The lowest wishlist count on there right now is 80k, when before it would've been 10 indie games as low as 6k wishlists. Feeling very lucky our game's early access release barely made it out before this changed. It was worth probably 1k wishlists for us, and we had some really unfortunate timing/positioning too. It can be worth thousands of wishlists and sales for smaller games. Steam is more heavily prioritizing larger games, with the budget and time to grow to enormous wishlist totals, or the rare indie viral hit. The small to mid-sized games just lost a way to find players. Steam players lost a tool to discover cool smaller games.

Yeah hopefully the calendar helps indie games. But it seems quite obfuscated on how it works. It was nice to have a system before with some fairly transparent rules. I am not an outrage merchant or Steam hater, just identifying a change that will have a real impact on my peers who may not have seen it yet.

Or would you perhaps prefer YouTube shows them on your viewer's front page? But I'm finding it very frustrating that you are ignoring my first-hand evidence and moving your goalposts as I present it (first you claimed it was purely a Wishlist ranking, now that "multiple things" played into it), without actually offering any evidence to the counter claim. Not that it matters anymore, but you are speaking very confidently about something it seems you haven't watched very closely. You needed to hit the wishlist threshold to be included on the list (for us we popped onto at about 5.5k). I've watched it like a hawk for the past 3 months. I watched my game drop in real time when we updated our release time. I've seen us in the exact same spot ranked above much bigger games for multiple weeks, just because we released earlier in the day. You could abuse the system to release as early as possible in order to maximize your time near the top of the list over weekends.

This is NOT wrong. It was absolutely ranked chronologically by release time. I have specific confirmation, because last week we asked Steam to change our release time, and saw our game move on the list instantly when it happened (down unfortunately) You needed a Wishlist threshold to get ON the list, but once on the list, you were ranked chronologically by release time. I cross-checked Wishlist rankings across games on the list alongside us all week, and there was absolutely no correlation between Wishlists and ranking. You would see games with 6k wishlists ahead of games with 100k. It was purely by release time. Here's some additional reading on it. reddit.com/r/gamedev/comm…

I'm gonna respond to you in good faith, because I trust lack context, not that you're just being intentionally obtuse. This list used to cycle through about 30-40 indie games a day. Now it seems to show the same 5 indie games for the better part of a week, and shows games from major publishers and corporations in the other slots, for up to a month (see Black Flag). Over the course of a given week, previously about 200+ indie games got a moment on the list. Now it will be maybe 5-10? Whether or not that's more valuable to you as a consumer, that's for you to decide! I encourage you to voice your preference. Whether that's more valuable for Steam as a platform, that's their prerogative too. What is undeniable, is that this is dramatically worse for a vast majority of indie games than the system that existed before. It is much better for the 5-10 indie games a week that get featured prominently. The other 190 games suffer.

If you're ever curious what YouTube's auto-generated AI thumbnails look like, don't open the box!! It just gives you Mr. Beast's face and teeth. Certainly on brand to merge two characters together, but I look 10 years older and 100 times scarier.

So... I made a video game... and now you can buy it. SkyShard is a city building auto battler, and I think it's pretty damn fun (so do the 96% positive reviewers on our demo).
