Who needs a display caseback when the movement is 220mm across? KERIS has taken the architecture of a mechanical watch movement and turned it into a fully working, freestanding timepiece. Gears, balance, escapement. All there in front of you. I genuinely wouldn't mind one of these sitting on my desk.

When a watch brand develops a new movement, the usual expectation is that you buy another watch. RZE has just developed its first digital module, but owners of the previous UTD-8000 can have it fitted for $100 from January. More features, better display, same watch. I like that approach.

@EuropeanWatchCo Really like the four little markers showing the start of next month. Such a small detail, but shows how much thought has gone into making the calendar genuinely useful as well as mechanically impressive.

Fashion houses get plenty of stick in the watch world, but I love seeing them bring something from their own world into watchmaking. Hermès’ Arceau Cheval Natté uses almost 400 silk threads, individually positioned by hand to form a horse motif originally created for its home objects.

A Quiet Club conversation yesterday led me to Tertium Quid Watch Tokyo. They both make mechanical alarms, but take different routes. Quiet Club built a new movement around a sounding dial. Tertium Quid reworks a vintage A. Schild 1475 with new bridges, hammer and gong. Definitely a maker I’ll be following.

@watchcherryblo Thank you. Tertium Quid is new to me. The Model R looks really interesting. Definitely one for me to dig into.

@GlobalWatchClub Four Hublots is a pretty steep price to pay for the AP Unless that’s what you actually wanted 😂

That sequence is the story. Research to machining capability to spin-off to watches. The watch is the commercial output of the engineering, not the starting point. Engineering becoming watchmaking. REF.008 ✓ 8/8

Research at Brescia didn’t end when the watches arrived. In 2025, Metelli, Abeni and colleagues published research on redesigning and micromachining a watch ratchet click. It isn’t publicly linked to Epsilon but is proof the research continues. mdpi.com/2072-666X/16/8… 7/8

Before Inceptum sold a watch, its founders were researching how to manufacture one. At the University of Brescia, Andrea Abeni and Alessandro Metelli worked on micromilling the mainplates and bridges of mechanical movements. REF.008 1/8 🧵

@watchcherryblo That must have been fascinating. I’m very jealous, Tokyo Watch Week looks like it was such a good showcase for Japanese watchmaking. Any other makers or watches you think I should check out?

G-SHOCK is launching the new MUDMAN with a rave 1,375 feet underground in an abandoned Welsh slate mine. Apparently getting there involves tunnels, waterlogged passages, ravines, zip lines and an abseil. And the legend Roni Size is playing. This feels appropriately excessive for a MUDMAN.
