My Mum was put on ‘anti psychotics’ aged 90 when discharged from hospital (broken shoulder) to her care home, without being told! When I looked at her chart and challenged it I was told ‘We put all the old dears on them when they leave. Helps with transition’

@ReadReadj All mighty reductionism means not feeling anything. Death.
@ReadReadj Completely criminal. When the standard of care is to cause severe harm for no reason, the system needs to be dismantled. It is completely and fundamentally broken.
As someone that used to work as a hospice chaplain, elder abuse in nursing homes and assisted living facilities is persistent, shocking, and an absolute black mark on the soul of the West. I am speaking in general, but I have also observed medications being used to sedate patients and crush their will, because in this context, it is more about the ease and convenience of labor for the nursing staff (and ability to understaff by greedy administrators), then it is about treating fellow humans in a dignified and honoring fashion.
@ReadReadj In Australian nursing homes, it's standard practice to put residents on antipsychotics to keep everyone quiet (subdued), even though these toxic drugs increase the risk of falls and death...
@ReadReadj Pharmaceutical corporations have taken over.
@ReadReadj "stops them kicking off" was the excuse given for routinely treating care home residents with antipsychotics (e.g. haloperidol).
@ReadReadj @benzosarebad Common story, unfortunately. Chemical restraints are frequently used with vulnerable patients (elderly, kids, disabled…) to make them easier for staff and family to handle. A docile person is easier to manipulate and they can make more money off of us. 😢😢
@ReadReadj I hope it was raised as a safeguarding..that's awful 😖
@ReadReadj Another example of negligent treatment of the elderly. In private care, another unnecessary &harmful charge. It’s a disgrace.
