Commercialization is one thing, and as much as a jersey patch or helmet ad may be annoying, I will personally take 100x new physical ads over this virtual setup. FIN. (19/19).

So where do we go from here? I fear the NHL has locked in these ad contracts, so getting them shut down mid-season seems unlikely. I hope that the NHL turns this off for the Stanley Cup Playoffs and does not pollute the playoffs with this level of eye strain … (18/n)

Now, you can argue that all of these things *could* be fixed; they are a mix of technical limitations and design decisions. But even if some could be improved, the key point is that digital board ads affect the ON ICE product. That’s why they are so different … (17/n)

#6 – Audio Delay & Glitches – The digital boards ads are inserted via a separate (presumably cloud) system, which means the main camera feeds must make a round trip to this system before being combined with PxP audio … (14/n)

But much like the motion blur, making this discrepancy more subtle makes it more insidious. Here you can see noticeably different shadows on the yellow boards which are not reflected in the ads, and a spotlight which is cutoff by the ads … (10/n)

#3 – Color Matching & Shadows – Like the motion blur, the ads are rendered with a single tone of white which does not necessarily match the tone of the boards being replaced. Again, this was more noticeable earlier in the season when they were brighter ... (9/n)

Unfortunately, the added blur is applied the same amount at all times; this creates an almost more insidious effect as your eyes still realize something is wrong, but have a harder time processing what that is … (8/n)

Interestingly, early in the season the problem was worse as the ads were rendered with far more sharpness. Apparently, the NHL realized this issue and applied a uniform blur to the ads to reduce sharpness … (7/n)

This creates a disorienting effect for your eyes. They are drawn to the in-focus boards, but you aren’t sure why. For me this is the single largest source of eye fatigue added by this scheme … (6/n)

#2 – Motion Blur. Any time the camera pans rapidly from side to side, as it does many times a game, most of the shot is going to be naturally blurred. Since the digital ads are added after the shot, they are the only thing left IN focus … (5/n)
