We backed the Walking Dead RPG Kickstarter as a retailer so that we could have copies for sale before the general wider release. General retail release date is five days from now, and our copies still haven't arrived. This isn't good enough.
Retailers back kickstarters partly because it means they get cool RPGs before other stores. Taking pledge money and only when the stock arrives telling retailers that they cannot sell before the official retail release date is reprehensible. I'm looking at you @FreeLeaguePub .
Bwahaha. They turned off replies. This thread did not go the way they planned. Huge white pill for the hobby. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated by hobbyists.
For context, the RPG that this person has worked on for Leyline Press, "Salvage Union", is one where the "good" guys are ACTUAL FUCKING COMMUNISTS. What could be more "problematic" than making an ideology responsible for the deaths of 100million+ people "good"?
"We believe that these are highly problematic games by authors and companies whose politics and actions we vehemently disagree with." What exactly is "highly problematic" about Lamentations of the Flame Princess exactly...?
And if you're complaining that online retailers have all the advantages, then you've found your own solution - BECOME AN ONLINE RETAILER!
It's because your shop doesn't have what they want to buy in stock. And the online retailer does. This would be less of a problem if your shop had more space devoted to being an actual games shop (with actual stock) and less space devoted to "somewhere your mates can play Magic"
One more classic piece of bad advice for owners of bricks & mortar games stores: "You have to sell at a discount to compete with online retailers". No, no, no.
In some cases, the answer will be 'yes'. But I suspect that in most cases, bricks & mortar games stores would actually do better by having a bigger range of stock on shelves.
But for many (perhaps most) bricks & mortar games stores, the reality is that putting in several tables for people to play at means not putting in shelves of stock. Does the revenue you get from offering play space really make up for the revenue lost from having less stock?
The other classic piece of bad advice I see given to startup tabletop games stores is "Provide tables for people to play at." This simple piece of advice makes one very big assumption...
...rather than mediocre at all of them. And then sell to that niche wherever they are, not just if they happen to walk past your shop.
Tabletop gaming covers a wide range of different hobbies - CCGs and other card games, heavy board games, 'family' / light board games, Warhammer, historical miniatures gaming, RPGs etc. If you want to be a successful retailer, be very good at one niche...
I see so much bad advice given to people thinking about starting up a tabletop games store, but perhaps nothing as damaging to their prospects (and perhaps the industry as a whole) as "You need to concentrate on Magic; that's where you'll make your money".
